As family caregivers, we handle many physical and emotional issues in any given day. Some are there for anyone to see and others we just like to keep to ourselves. This is especially true when we are dealing with our vulnerabilities such as our big emotional silent swings, or being gripped by fear because our loved one is having a difficult day or the best news from the doc is a problem. While our reactions can be understandable, both are not in our control. Interestingly, it’s these type of issues we allow to emotionally and physically beat us up at the drop of a hat.
It is so important to stop this assault and take charge of what influences our emotions rather than going along with them. To do this, begin with:
• Accepting you are doing your best and understand what you can and cannot control.
• Understand that regardless of what you are feeling it is not permanent.
• Reach out and maintain social connections, so when you need support it’s there.
• Believe with all your heart you are not alone. There are scores of like-minded people, within your reach, and ready to help.
