Holyoke Police Issue Scam Warning for Rental Properties

Holyoke, MA – Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan and Holyoke Police Detectives are warning our residents about an apparent rental scam affecting individuals searching for housing online.

The scam generally involves properties being advertised online with websites like Craigslist or other social media sites, with communication handled through email or messaging by someone claiming to be a landlord or property representative.

In some cases, individuals are being asked to send deposits or upfront rental payments prior to viewing the property in person.

This can happen to homes that are not for rent or when homes are legitimately for sale, scammers may attempt to utilize these properties for nefarious purposes.

The Holyoke Police Department urges you to be cautious when looking for rentals online and to avoid sending any money before seeing a property and ensuring the person(s) showing the property are legitimate.

Holyoke Police Detectives Foil BitCoin Scam

Holyoke, MA – Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan would like to warn our residents about Cyrpto-currency or BitCoin scams and share a success story.

The scam varies, but usually involves a victim receiving a phone call, the caller states that they owe money and are asked to deposit cash into a BitCoin Kiosk. These types of scams involving BitCoin have defrauded western Massachusetts residents of more than $2 Million in the past 2-3 years. If you receive a phone call such as this, please just hang up.

Recently, this scam, involved a caller stating over the phone that the person had an active arrest warrant for missing jury duty and the person owed $6000 or be at risk of arrest.

The victim was instructed to withdraw money from a bank and take it to a local BitCoin Kiosk to deposit it. Once the victim deposited some money, the victim realized they were being scammed and called police.

Holyoke Police Detective James Parnell acted quickly and was able to cancel this transaction before it closed out, where the victim is expected to receive a refund from the Kiosk operator.

In most cases, involving these types of transactions, the money is unable to be recovered as once the transactions processes, which can occur within minutes, and the money is no longer retrievable.

Due to Detective Parnell’s quick actions, this prevented the loss of a significant amount of cash and stopped the scammers from profiting.
