Holyoke Police Issue Scam Warning for Rental Properties
Holyoke, MA – Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan and Holyoke Police Detectives are warning our residents about an apparent rental scam affecting individuals searching for housing online.
The scam generally involves properties being advertised online with websites like Craigslist or other social media sites, with communication handled through email or messaging by someone claiming to be a landlord or property representative.
In some cases, individuals are being asked to send deposits or upfront rental payments prior to viewing the property in person.
This can happen to homes that are not for rent or when homes are legitimately for sale, scammers may attempt to utilize these properties for nefarious purposes.
The Holyoke Police Department urges you to be cautious when looking for rentals online and to avoid sending any money before seeing a property and ensuring the person(s) showing the property are legitimate.
