Labor Day is often thought of as the unofficial end of summer: A long weekend, a cookout, or one last chance to enjoy the season. But at its heart, Labor Day is about something much bigger: America’s workers. 🇺🇸😀

First celebrated during the labor movement of the late 1800s, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. It was created to recognize the contributions, achievements, and dedication of working people and the individuals whose skills, determination, and hard work help businesses succeed, families thrive, and communities grow.

On Monday, that recognition is just as important.

Every day, workers across our community are caring for patients, teaching children, building and repairing our infrastructure, preparing food, driving trucks, operating machinery, running businesses, assisting customers, supporting families, and performing countless other jobs that keep our economy moving.

But Labor Day also reminds us that a job is about more than a paycheck. Meaningful employment can provide independence, confidence, stability, opportunity, and a sense of purpose. A first job can open a door. A new skill can change a career. A promotion can change a family’s future. And sometimes, one opportunity is all it takes to begin an entirely new chapter.

At MassHire Holyoke, we have the privilege of seeing those new chapters begin every day. We see job seekers learn new skills, update their resumes, prepare for interviews, connect with employers, enter training programs, change careers, and discover possibilities they may not have realized were available to them.

We also see employers investing in people, providing opportunities for workers to learn, grow, contribute, and build careers.

That connection between people and opportunity is what makes a strong workforce. And a strong workforce helps create a stronger community.

This Labor Day, we celebrate the experienced worker who has spent decades perfecting a craft. We celebrate the young person walking into a first job. We celebrate the individual returning to the workforce after time away, the person learning an entirely new career, and the job seeker who keeps going even after hearing “no.”

We celebrate the people working behind the scenes whose contributions may not always be noticed, but whose work matters every single day.

And we celebrate the employers who recognize that their greatest resource is their people.

To every worker, job seeker, employer, educator, trainer, and workforce professional helping to build a stronger Western Massachusetts: thank you.
