Seagrass health is one of the most important indicators of the health of Tampa Bay, and local observations can make a real difference.

When anglers and longtime bay users noticed changes in seagrass coverage near Anna Maria Island, their reports helped spark action. In partnership with Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Suncoast Waterkeeper, and the City of Holmes Beach Clean Water Committee, a new seagrass monitoring transect has been established to help track conditions in an area that wasn’t previously being surveyed.

This is a great example of how community input contributes to science-based decision-making. Researchers have decades of seagrass data across Tampa Bay, but local knowledge helps identify areas that deserve a closer look.

If you’ve noticed changes in seagrass where you fish, boat, paddle, or spend time on the water, share what you’ve seen. Your observations may help guide future monitoring and conservation efforts.

We all want our homes to be safe, our gardens beautiful, and our yards clean. But when we reach for pesticides and herbicides, we may be harming far more than the pests we’re trying to control.

These chemicals don’t stop at the edge of our property. Rain washes them into storm drains, canals, and waterways β€” the very places where we swim, fish, and enjoy nature. They can linger in the soil for years, harming bees, birds, pets, and other wildlife along the way.

Poisons meant for weeds and insects often cause slow, painful deaths for owls, hawks, pollinators, and countless animals that help keep our ecosystems balanced.
Is a greener lawn worth that cost?

We can choose safer, smarter solutions. Clean water starts with each of us. The choices we make today shape the future of our environment and our community.

Let’s not poison what we love. Let’s protect our water, our wildlife, and our future. πŸŒŽπŸ’š

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Happy Flag Day from the City of Holmes Beach! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Today we celebrate the flags that unite us, tell our stories, and represent the communities we proudly call home.

The Holmes Beach flag is more than a design; it’s a symbol of our island identity, coastal heritage, and community spirit. 🌊

Its blue stripes represent the Gulf and Bay waters that surround Anna Maria Island, while the white stripe reflects the sandy shoreline that connects us all. At the center stands the sea turtle; a symbol of resilience, wisdom, protection, and our commitment to preserving the natural beauty and coastal way of life that make Holmes Beach so special. 🐒

As we honor Flag Day, we celebrate not only the American flag, but also the local symbols that remind us who we are: a strong, connected community and truly β€œA Town with a Future.”

🌎 TRY SOME ALTERNATIVES TO HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS ♻️
A simple way to reduce hazardous materials in your home is by using safer homemade substitutes with less harmful ingredients. These alternatives can work just as well while helping protect our environment and waterways.

🧴 Aerosols
Use pump sprays or other non-aerosol cleaning and grooming products whenever possible.

🧼 DIY All-Purpose Cleaner
Mix:
β€’ Β½ cup ammonia
β€’ ΒΌ cup white vinegar
β€’ A handful of baking soda
β€’ 1 gallon warm water

⚠️ Do not use on wood surfaces.
✨ Safer Surface Cleaner
Wash surfaces with:
β€’ Β½ cup borax
β€’ 1 gallon hot water

🚰 Natural Drain Cleaner
Mix:
β€’ 1 cup baking soda
β€’ 1 cup salt
β€’ 1 cup white vinegar

Pour down the drain, wait 10 minutes, then flush thoroughly with boiling water. Use a rubber plunger if needed for stubborn clogs.

πŸ—‘οΈ If you do have hazardous materials, please dispose of them properly.

β€œWaste isn’t waste until we waste it.” πŸŒΏβ™»οΈ

Small changes in our yards and gardens can create healthier communities for people, pets, pollinators, and our waterways.

Instead of relying on harsh pesticides and herbicides, there are natural alternatives that work with nature β€” not against it.

This album highlights simple ways to go toxin free:
🌱 Mulch instead of herbicides
🍌 Compost food scraps into healthy soil
🐞 Welcome beneficial insects
πŸ’§ Protect waterways with natural lawn care
🌼 Support pollinators with native-friendly gardens

Healthy soil grows stronger plants. Stronger plants naturally resist pests. And thriving landscapes help protect the places we all love.

Together, we can turn waste into resources and create a cleaner, greener community.
🌿 Go toxin free
πŸ’§ Protect our waterways
🐝 Protect pollinators
♻️ Reduce waste naturally
