This news broke our hearts. Greenblatt's has long been a tradition in our family, especially on Oscar Night. Still hoping someone new will acquire it and carry on their legacy.

Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks pose for a publicity photo at the entrance to their new studio on Santa Monica Blvd. in 1922. This sign was never permanently hung above the entrance gates.

“Mary Pickford, whose brilliant career has paralleled the meterioric rise of the motion picture to first place in the entertainment world, has definitely been linked with each phase of this industry’s progress.” ~ E.O. Palmer, History of Hollywood, p. 226

One of the first actresses to claim screen credit in her name, Pickford epitomized stardom in the silent film era and would easily be remembered for that contribution alone. However, her contributions to the industry go far beyond that work. By 1916, she'd organized the Mary Pickford Company and acquired a substantial interest in the profits of her films. She became an independent producer in 1918, and was one of the major partners and executives in the United Artists Corporation. She partnered with various others, including her husband Douglas Fairbanks, Jessie Lasky and Charlie Chaplin. Pickford Fairbanks Studios was constructed at Santa Monica and Formosa, not far from Chaplin’s studio on LaBrea. These early facilities set the tone for the major studios which would chart Hollywood’s future: self-contained acreage with sound stages, offices, editing laboratories, and set construction. Pickford was also a major player and philanthropist in the community, selling war bonds, finding shelter for other women at the Hollywood Studio Club, and collaborating with other women in the industry. She was honored with a special Academy Award in 1975 for her decades-long contributions to the industry.

Here's a classic shot of Douglas Fairbanks directing the original "Robin Hood" at his Pickford Fairbanks Studios (aka PickFair) in 1922. He also starred in the film, one of his most famous "swashbuckling" silent film roles. It was Warner Bros. Studios' 1938 remake and "talkie" version "The Adventures of Robin Hood" starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and Basil Rathbone that would later win 3 Oscars for Best Art Direction, Film Editing, and Original Score.

It's beginning to look like Awards Season in Hollywood so in the coming weeks, we'll highlight some favorites from our archive, starting with this one, of the first ever Academy Awards banquet in the Blossom Room at The Hollywood Roosevelt in 1929. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was founded in 1927, but the first private dinner and ceremony wasn't held until 1929, hence the caption that reads "Second Anniversary and Awards Banquet".
