Understandably, we have gotten many calls and reports
involving wildlife and rabies related questions. Below is the most comprehensive website you can visit for all things rabies.

One of the questions or comments is regarding the “rabies
bait program”. This program is managed by the Department of State Health Services. If you would like to see the
map of the program, which is done annually, you can visit this website:

https://www.dshs.texas.gov/rabies/oral-rabies-vaccination-program-orvp/maps

From the web: Once a year, aircraft drop an oral vaccine bait coated in fish oil and fishmeal
crumbles as an attractant, on the targeted areas. The goal is to maintain a
zone of vaccinated wildlife along the US-Mexico and Texas-New Mexico borders to prevent the reintroduction of rabies variants of concern.

The Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis
Control Branch concluded the 2026 aerial distribution of oral rabies vaccine baits on January 27th. Hand baiting activities in and around El Paso were conducted January 15th. This enhanced campaign distributed 693,600 individual vaccine baits along the Texas-Mexico border and along parts of the Texas-New Mexico border over approximately 10 days.

According to data, the last time Bexar County was considered
for the program was 1997-2002.

Regarding rabies cases in general. You can find a map of all confirmed cases at this link. If you click on “all animals, you will see all the cases”:

If you see a bunch of police cars in the 100 block of Canyon Creek, no emergency, we are visiting the little brave boy who got attacked a few days ago. He is doing great. We brought him some goodies to cheer him up.

Follow up on the Fox bite case

We want to share an important safety update.

Yesterday, authorities responded to a call after a fox attacked a boy playing in his yard. The fox was safely put down on the scene and transported to a lab. Today, we received official notification that the fox tested positive for rabies. HPPD Animal Control has already received several calls today about other foxes roaming our immediate area. While it is normal for foxes to occasionally hunt during the day, we need every household to stay vigilant.

🛑 Signs of Concern in Wildlife Extreme Aggression: Unprovoked snapping, biting, or charging at people or pets.
Unusual Tameness: Showing absolutely no fear of humans or open spaces.
Loss of Balance: Stumbling, staggering, walking in circles, or appearing paralyzed.
Excessive Saliva: Foaming at the mouth or heavy, wet drooling.
Self-Mutilation: Chewing or biting at their own limbs.

🐾 What You Should Do Right Now
Watch Pets: Keep dogs on short leashes and bring outdoor cats inside.
Secure Trash: Do not leave pet food or open garbage bins outside to attract wildlife.
Keep Distance: Never approach, feed, or attempt to help a sick animal yourself.
Report Sightings: Call local animal control immediately if you spot an animal showing these symptoms at (210)378-1898.

-Very important to make sure your pets are up to date on vaccinations! Vanguard mobile clinic is a great option if you need shots right away.

Stay safe,
Chief Prichard

Last night around 3:30 am, HPPD officers spotted an individual in the 100 block of Mecca. When he attempted to make contact, the suspect took off on foot. After a brief foot chase, the suspect got into a white car with a driver and fled at a high speed. Officers then began a pursuit and set up road spikes to stop the vehicle. The pursuit continued and eventually led to 281 highway and out of the area. The car was driving in a very unsafe manner and the pursuit was terminated. Surrounding agencies were notified.

Officers learned the car they were driving was stolen and more than likely they were attempting to break into cars in our area.

Great job night shift!

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), in partnership with the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD), has made changes to Texas driver license (DL) and identification (ID) cards under the Texas Driving with Disability Program to improve communication between law enforcement and ALL Texans.

Now, customers participating in the Texas Driving with Disability Program can have the “Communication Impediment” or the new “Deaf/Hard of Hearing” option placed on the front of their DL or ID card – allowing them to alert law enforcement that they have a disability or health condition that may impede their ability to communicate.

To learn more about Texas Driving with Disability and how to apply for one of these DL or ID cards, visit: bit.ly/4dlv49x.
