This week I was asked to speak about this important topic facing our state and the education of students headed into the workforce. For every five people in the trades who retire there are just two who are able to replace them. There is a significant need for more students to consider going into the trades. Not all need to be college-bound. We must focus on each individual students gifts and passions and expose them to opportunities in the trades while in high school. It’s already begun to grow here in West MI with the ISD’s.

Michigan leaders highlighted how talent shortages, evolving skill demands, and fragmented systems are reshaping the state’s competitiveness.

I’m sponsoring one of these two bipartisan bills in the House Education and Workforce committee which I am honored to chair. These bills will help our students discover their careers and callings and also increase workforce in the trades and better our economy across the state.

With just over half of Michigan high school graduates going off to college, leaders say more needs to be done to give them interesting and useful learning experiences in K-12 schools.

On this day, May 18, 1929, the FIRST Tulip Time Festival was held in Holland! This is how each of us can make a difference, because it was a Holland Public Schools teacher, Lida Roger’s who approached the Women’s Literary Club in 1927 with the idea of planting 100,000 tulips to bring visitors and beauty to our area. The rest is history!

Every resident can make a small and large difference in a community.
