Did you know missing just a few days early in the school year leads to much more absences throughout the year? A student is considered chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of the school year – that’s just 2 days a month. Even excused absences add up and can impact learning. Attendance is about more than being in the classroom, it’s about being part of a community of people who care!

When students are at school regularly, they have more opportunities to connect with teachers and classmates, build friendships, feel a sense of belonging, and take part in the experiences that make school meaningful. Early Childhood Community Director Maureen Schmidt recently presented at the 2026 The Chamber - Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg Forum Series on Childcare & Education in Spring Lake, highlighting how access to child care impacts both families and our local workforce.

Child care is essential economic infrastructure for attracting and retaining talent in Ottawa County. While progress has been made, demand continues to exceed supply.

By bringing together local employers, child care providers, and community partners to share data and solutions, we can build a stronger, more accessible system where working families and businesses can thrive together.

A new preschool opportunity is opening for Ottawa Area families with 3-year-olds.

Beginning this school year, OAISD is launching Michigan's Strong Beginnings program at the Tri-Cities Family YMCA in Grand Haven, giving eligible children access to free, high-quality prekindergarten. The new program gives children an extra year to learn through play, build friendships, and develop the skills that prepare them for kindergarten.

This is the first Strong Beginnings location in Ottawa Area, with hopes to expand access to more families over time.
