If like me, you enjoy history, this one’s for you:
It’s 1787 and 44-year old Elizabeth Willing Powell, an influential Philadelphia woman who was active in political and social circles, asked an attendee of the U.S. Constitutional Convention, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” The man replied immediately, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
The man was Benjamin Franklin, often called Dr. Franklin because of his honorary doctorate degrees. His remark has become a symbolic reminder of civic responsibility, emphasizing that the survival of a republic depends on the active engagement and vigilance of its citizens.
Our republic is not sustained by one office alone. Every race. Every seat. Every name on the ballot matters.
The days of voting blindly down a party line are over. The stakes are too high. We must know who is asking for our trust. Do they have the integrity, experience, judgment, and commitment to serve the people and protect our democratic institutions?
The future of our communities, our state, and our nation will be shaped by the choices we make in every election, not just the ones that dominate the headlines.
Time is running short. Get involved. Put up a yard sign. Volunteer. Donate. Talk to your neighbors. Most importantly, vote.
Democracy doesn’t survive on autopilot. It survives because ordinary people choose to show up, participate, and defend it.
This election matters. Every office matters. Every vote matters.
