The tragedies that unfolded 25 years ago on September 11th were unimaginable to all of us. The heartbreak and hurt most have never experienced. We at Holden Beach and surrounding communities decided to honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice and completed a stair climb “challenge.” Staff from Holden Beach Administration, Police and Public Works Departments, as well as, the Tri-Beach Fire Department, the Shallotte Police Department, and Brunswick County Emergency Services took part in this event. We climbed 2,200 steps in honor of the fire and police personnel that courageously responded on September 11th. We made it a competition (only for friendly barbs). It ultimately was to honor the sacrifices that were made that day and form solidarity between departments of the work that is done daily.
May we never forget the events of that day, honor those affected by this event and continue to pray for our current military and first responders who are daily keeping us safe.
