***Black Bear Sighting In Avon***

Last night Holbrook/Avon Animal Control learned that several Avon and Randolph residents had observed and photographed a black bear in the area of Rt 28 / N. Main St on the Avon / Randolph line.

Today while patrolling the area, Avon Police have confirmed 2 additional sighting in the area of DeMarco Park as well as D.W. Field Park.

Animal Control is asking residents in the area to use caution. If seen do not try to approach or follow the bear. Also keep a close watch on pets, secure trash barrels, chicken coops, and remove bird feeders until the bear moves through the area.

Coyote pups are born between March and May across the eastern US. By now they're emerging from the den for the first time — wobbly, curious, and completely dependent on their parents for food.

The adults are hunting more frequently and covering wider territory because they're feeding a family. That's not aggression. That's provisioning.

Both parents forage. The male hunts and brings food back. As pups start eating solid food, both adults expand their range. They show up in places you haven't seen them before. Rabbits, rodents, insects, fruit — they're shopping, not stalking.

🌿 If you see one watching you or your dog:

- You may be near a den — walk calmly in the other direction
- The stare isn't a threat, it's monitoring because pups are nearby
- By fall, the young disperse and leave the area. The parents stay.

The coyote in the neighborhood isn't moving in. She's been here. She's just feeding a bigger family right now 🐾

We’re receiving a high volume of calls this time of year requesting Animal Control to remove wildlife from non-living spaces like attics, chimneys, sheds, and under decks. We wanted to share some important information to help guide residents:

Animal Control Officers (ACOs) are not licensed to remove or manage nuisance wildlife from private property. Under Massachusetts law, any wildlife that is removed must either be released on the same property or humanely euthanized. Relocating wildlife elsewhere is unlawful and inhumane, as it often leads to suffering or death for the animal and disrupts local ecosystems.

The most effective and humane solution is prevention and eviction—not removal.

✔️ Install chimney caps
✔️ Seal all entry points
✔️ Use one-way doors to allow animals to leave safely
✔️ Inspect your home regularly for gaps or damage

Simply removing an animal does not solve the problem—another will quickly take its place if the entry point remains open.

This time of year is especially sensitive, as many animals are raising their young. Removing a mother can leave babies behind, leading to prolonged suffering and additional issues. If possible, we strongly recommend waiting until the young are old enough to leave on their own, then sealing the area once you’re sure the family has moved on.

**Dog License and Renewals**
To ALL Holbrook Dog Owners: If you have not done so already, please make sure to renew your annual dog license. Licenses from the previous year expired on March 31, 2026. The license renewal fee is $10.00 per dog That can be paid in person, by mail, dropped off in the red mail box at the town hall or online as long as the rabies vaccination is up to date. When renewing, please make sure you have an updated rabies certificate from the vet.
Dogs not registered by June 30th will be charged a late fee of $25.00 in addition to the cost of the license.
