Tornado Watch Until 3 PM

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch in our area until 3 PM today.

Conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds up to 80mph, large hail up to a half inch, and heavy rainfall. Community members are encouraged to remain aware and monitor local weather forecasts throughout the day.

If this watch is upgraded to a warning, please:
-Seek shelter immediately in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building
-Stay away from windows and exterior walls
-Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and emergency information

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for northern New York from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18.

An unusually strong low-pressure system is expected to bring powerful wind gusts ranging from 40 to 55 mph, with a chance of severe thunderstorms throughout the day. These conditions may result in downed tree limbs, scattered power outages, and hazardous travel conditions.

Main Hazards:
• Strong winds capable of downing trees and branches
• Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms
• Damaging wind gusts
• Heavy rain and lightning
• Potential power outages

Timing:
• Strong winds: 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
• Greatest thunderstorm risk: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, use caution when traveling, and stay weather aware throughout the day. Monitor local forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

A seasonally unusual windstorm is expected Thursday with south winds gusting into the 40 to 55 MPH range. In addition to these widespread strong winds during the day, thunderstorms capable of isolated damaging winds will also develop. The potential for severe thunderstorms is primarily during the afternoon.

HEAT ADVISORY ANNOUNCEMENT BY SRMT Office of Emergency Management & Safety

With high temperatures forecasted for Friday, June 12, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Office of Emergency Management and Safety (OEMS) is urging all community members to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Heat-Related Illness: Know the Risks
Heat exhaustion can become heat stroke, a life-threatening emergency, if not treated promptly. Recognize the signs and act quickly.

Preventive Measures:
-Stay hydrated with cold water
- Take cool showers or baths
-Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
-Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat (12 PM. – 8 PM)
-Avoid alcohol
-Cool your skin with water throughout the day
Power Outage Preparedness:
-Extreme heat can strain the power grid. In the event of an outage:
-Operate generators only outdoors and away from windows and doors
-Never connect a generator directly to home wiring or use a wall outlet, as it poses serious safety risks to your home and utility workers

The Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning for Northern New York due to dangerous fire weather conditions. The condition of this warning remains the same.

What is a Red Flag Warning?
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring or about to occur. This combination of strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures can cause fires to start easily and spread rapidly.

Please avoid:

SRMT Office of Emergency Management and Safety would like to let the community know that Akwesasne is under a Fire Weather Watch effective for April 28th.

The following weather condition are expected to increase the risk for wild fires:
• Winds from the south 10–15 mph, gusts up to 30 mph (higher in some areas)
• Humidity as low as 20–25%
• High temperatures in the upper 60s to mid-70s
• Critical fire conditions possible between 11 AM – 7 PM

Please use extreme caution with any outdoor burning or activities that could create sparks. Stay alert for updates and possible Red Flag Warnings.
