Update:

At approximately 5:20 pm, all firefighters were removed from the fire lines for rehab, food and to rehydrate. After a short break, Forest Rangers redeployed all fire crews to knock down any remaining perimeter fires.

As of 7:49 pm, Bombay VFD Incident Command has declared the fire contained, and all units and firefighters are returning to the staging area. New York State Forest Rangers will remain on scene monitoring hot spots, and awaiting heavy equipment to reach and assist with extinguishment of areas inaccessible by firefighters.

As of 8:16 pm, all units and firefighters have returned to their respective Departments. This was a 7 hour firefighting operation.

Drone operations by the HAVFD and NYS DEC Police proved invaluable during this operation.

05/22/2026

At approximately 1:20 pm, the HAVFD answered a mutual aid request to assist the Bombay VFD at a reported wild land fire on County Rt. 2 in Bombay. First arriving firefighters found a large wild land fire approximately 30-40 acres in size. Bombay immediately requested additional resources from surrounding departments.

Currently on scene are:

Bombay VFD
Fort Covington VFD
HAVFD
Brushton VFD
Dickinson VFD
New York State Forest Rangers
New York State DEC Police

As of this time, the fire has not yet been declared contained, however extensive efforts by exhausted firefighters has greatly reduced the size and threat.

Before gaining control of the fire, it doubled in size to an estimated 80 acres.

Firefighters remain on scene conducting mop up operations around the perimeter of fire.

No injuries have been reported.

On Saturday, May 16th, 2026, The HAVFD held it's second Youth Drone Camp at Station 1 on State Rt 37. Applicants that were not selected from our first Camp, together with new applicants, were randomly selected live on our page.

Instructors for the course, all licensed drone pilots through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transport Canada were:
Chief of Dept. Kanatiio Mitchell
FF Jeremy Thompson
FF Adrian McDonald
FF Cam Mitchell
FF Jason Lazore

Students learned the fundamentals of drone flight and safety, provide basic airspace awareness, built confidence, teamwork and responsibility, and spark interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

The initiative serves as both an educational foundation and a career pathway, helping build the next generation of leaders in technology, public safety, and aviation.

MCA Tsi:snaine District Chief Scott Peters stopped by to see how things were going.

The HAVFD wishes to extend it's sincere gratitude to the Tri-District Recreation Committee, for without whose very generous contribution, this camp would not have been possible.

Students were also given a tour of the fire station and apparatus. Hopefully, we have some future firefighters in the group.

Each student left with a new respect for drone flight, AND, their very own brand new drone!

We, at the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, wish to express our sincere gratitude to our partners at the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance Service as they Celebrate National EMS week.
The dedication and commitment they show as they strive to provide the highest level of out of hospital of emergency medical care to the citizen of Akwesasne and surrounding communities is immeasurable.

If you see them out in the community, please pause for a brief moment to thank them for their service.
