The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council provides an update on the progress of the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim.

On Ohiarí:ha/June 3, 2026, Tribal Council Chief Conners, Chief Thompson, and Chief Garrow attended the U.S. Senate bill hearing in Washington, D.C. where bill S.3475 resolving the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim was presented, along with five other bills, to the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. The committee had the opportunity to clarify information relating to each bill, prior to accepting or ratifying.

The Tribe is pleased that the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim has reached another milestone in the legislative process, closer to bringing finality to over 40 years of concerted effort to return ancestral Mohawk lands and will continue to provide timely and transparent updates as the bill progresses.

Tewaaraton Outstanding Haudenosaunee Scholarship Recipient, Jayden James

Congratulations to Jayden James, son of Tina Conners-James and Damion James, on being a recipient of the 2026 Tewaaraton Outstanding Haudenosaunee Scholarship presented by Hildene Capital. This award recognizes “outstanding student-athletes who embody excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, and service while honoring the traditions and heritage of the Creator’s Game,” according to a release by the Tewaaraton Foundation on May 27th.

Tribal Chief Michael Conners was in attendance at the scholarship award ceremony on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Washington, D.C. where Teiakotshatatenion, daughter of Kawennahente and Ian Clute, opened with the Ohèn:ton Karihwatéhkwen. Chief Conners shared, "It is an honor to witness another rising Akwesasne athlete to be recognized for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements. Jayden serves as a pillar of inspiration for our youth. His story, like many others from our community, offers a kind reminder that dedication and compassion will take you far."

Jayden James is a Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal member, whose lacrosse roots run deep as grandson to Ontario Hall of Fame and Akwesasne Hall of Fame Inductee Brian Conners. Jayden has established himself as an exceptional rising star on and off the field. Through his career at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. he was a four-year National Honor Society Member and earned the Academic Honor with Distinction Award each year. Jayden is currently the top ranked defenseman in the Class of 2026. Additionally, he has garnered All-World Team honors, USA Lacrosse's All-American recognition, first-team All-Met, and first-team All-Star recognition with the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference.

In addition to his many academic and athletic achievements, Jayden desires to uplift others in need through various philanthropic endeavors including fundraising, charitable donations, and volunteering. Using winnings from a lacrosse tournament, he donated to help fund research and bring awareness to Parkinson’s Disease through Bigfoot Endurance, a cause that is deeply important to him. Throughout high school, he volunteered his time to prepare meals for women’s and homeless shelters in the D.C. area. This fall, James will attend Syracuse University, where he will join the Orangemen’s lacrosse program.

Tribal Council shared, "Jayden is among the many Mohawks who strive to make a better world through their community service, as well as their outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom. We congratulate him on his many achievements and will be cheering him on as he suits up for the Syracuse Orange next Spring."

Jayden joins previous Akwesasne Mohawk scholarship awardees Jianna Lazore (2025), Avery Doran (2024), Brett Bucktooth (2024), Wynter Jock (2023), Savanna Swamp (2023), Crayton Cree (2023), Peter Thais (2021), Yanenowi Logan (2020), Cobie Cree (2020), Jacelyn Lazore & Mirabella Lazore (2019), Isaiah Cree (2019), and Kason Tarbell (2014).

SAINT REGIS MOHAWK TRIBAL COUNCIL ENACTS AKWESASNE MOHAWK CODE TALKERS RECOGNITION DAY ANNUALLY IN MAY

On Oneratohkó:wa/May 22, 2026, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council held a private ceremony for the 1st Annual Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talker Recognition Day at Ia’teiewenhnani’haras “Echo/A Voice that Reaches Far Away” Amphitheater in Generations Park. The event marked the 10th anniversary of the presentation of Silver and Bronze Congressional Medals to the Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talkers in May 2016 at the Travis Solomon Memorial Lacrosse Box.

Descendants of the Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talkers, and students from the Akwesasne Freedom School, recited the Ohén:ton Karihwatékwen, “Words Before All Else,” followed by an opening from the American Legion Post 1479 Color Guard.

26 Mohawk Code Talkers from Akwesasne were honored for their service during World War II, where they used the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) language to transmit undecipherable military communications, which contributed to the allied forces success in the South Pacific, New Guinea and the Philippines. These unbreakable messages helped save countless lives.

Chief Ross Garrow gave special recognition to Akwesasrón:on and centenarian Jack Leaf, who proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Leaf, touted as the last remaining World War II veteran, received a standing ovation in honor of his military service

Chief Garrow shared on behalf of the Council, “Their work demonstrated that Indigenous languages were not only cultural treasures, but also strategic assets that strengthened wartime communication. It’s about remembering their bravery and service, valuing our identity and Kanien’kehá language, and ensuring our recorded history includes the Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talkers, and so we will continue to commemorate their contributions and honor their sacrifices.”

Sub-Chief Benjamin Herne, Master of the Ceremonies, reflected on its emotional impact, “It was an emotional time for many of our families in attendance. I was very happy to have an opportunity to acknowledge our Mohawk soldiers and the recognition they deserved; for their bravery, sacrifice, and patriotism that will forever live in our hearts for generations to come. It was a powerful day for the families of the Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talkers to help us kick off Memorial Day weekend.”

Following the recognitions, the Echo Sky singers and drummers performed an honor song in Kanien’kehá. The beat of drum echoed through the amphitheater, drawing in attendees who stood in quiet respect, many emotionally moved. Singer Mark Light honored his family prior to the performance by sharing, “Today we honor the Code Talker families, including my family member, Edgar Jock.”
