Welcome to the Science Corner’s second installment in the series on research ethics. The documented instances of harm described in the first installment published in our September issue clearly establish the need for more rigorous oversight of research. Institutional review boards (IRBs) were developed to oversee research and implement regulations designed to protect participants. IRBs also play a critical role in teaching investigators how to conduct research in acceptable ways. To dig deeper into this aspect of research, Dr. Emily Sullivan describes the IRB, its activities, and its role in promoting ethical research practices. She describes specific safeguards enacted by IRBs and how they help to maintain trust in the scientific process for participants and consumers of research. Dr. Sullivan also provides suggestions for prospective investigators in their interactions with the IRB.

The recent surge in Medicaid audits, increased reports of fraudulent billing, and increased scrutiny of ABA services can be overwhelming and confusing to applied behavior analysis (ABA) service providers. While most providers use the guidance provided by Medicaid and other insurance companies to appropriately document services, bill properly, and engage in ethical practices, requirements for documentation can be confusing, contradictory, and vague. In this piece, Hailu Jardines, Co-Founder and CEO of Office Puzzle, clarifies the purpose of Medicaid audits and offers practical recommendations for how ABA providers can protect and prepare themselves should they be audited in the future.

In this issue, Svein Eikseth, PhD, Gina Green, PhD, BCBA-D, and Eric Larsson, PhD, LP, BCBA-D, present a comprehensive review and critique of a recent study by Aguirre Mtanous and colleagues titled “Mental health outcomes associated with applied behavior analysis in a U.S. national sample of privately insured autistic youth.” In their review the authors take a close look at the reported results and offer an analysis of what families, clinicians, and insurers should draw from the Aguirre Mtanous report.

In this installment of Is There Science Behind That?, Elizabeth Hardesty, MA, BCBA, Kassidy Ashbeck, MS, and Thomas Zane, PhD, BCBA-D, review the research on camel milk as a treatment to support individuals with autism. The authors found limited research on the use of camel milk to improve behavior in individuals with autism. Furthermore, the available research was of low quality and did not show that the treatment was effective. Read the article to learn more about the research on camel milk and alternative evidence-based treatments that can support individuals with autism.
