I want to address the proposed data center in the Ross Township section of Hobart and explain why I am taking no position on it.
As Township Assessor, my responsibility is not to decide whether a development should or should not happen. That role belongs to the appropriate planning, zoning, and elected bodies, along with the residents who deserve to have their voices heard through that process.
Having previously served 11 years on the Hobart City Council, I understand the weight of those decisions and the amount of information, discussion, and legal guidance that often goes into them. I also respect the difficult job our council members have to do. Because I am not privy to the same information guiding their decisions today, it would not be fair or respectful for me to judge their actions from the outside.
My job is to ensure that all property is assessed fairly, accurately, and according to the law—without politics, favoritism, or personal agendas. The people of Hobart Township deserve an Assessor who stays focused on the duties of the office and treats every taxpayer equally.
Since the proposed project falls under the jurisdiction of Ross Township, questions specifically about its assessment and tax impact would be better answered by the Ross Township Assessor.
Reasonable people can have different opinions on this project, and I respect that. My commitment is to remain professional, impartial, and dedicated to serving every resident of Hobart Township with fairness and integrity.
For the record, the closest thing I've said on my page about data centers is if my opponent, the former Ross Township Assessor hadn't over assessed the Southlake Mall to the tune of the City of Hobart had to get a 25 MILLION DOLLAR LOAN from the State of Indiana to pay the mall back for his Misadventures in Assessing then Hobart probably wouldn't have even entertained the idea of a data center.
