Grateful for good neighbors. 😊 After last week’s storm, a large branch came down on our roof, thankfully causing no further damage. Ridgewood Tree arrived with incredible speed and care to remove the debris and ensure the building was safe.

We’re lucky to have such reliable local partners who help protect this historic treasure. Thank you, Ridgewood Tree, for your swift response and steady hands.

The Hermitage, originally built in the eighteenth century, was visited by George Washington and other Revolutionary War figures after the Battle of Monmouth and served as the site of Aaron Burr's 1782 marriage to Theodosia Prevost. In 1807, Dr. Elijah Rosencrantz purchased the property and in 1847 commissioned architect William H. Ranlett to transform it into the Gothic Revival style structure known as Waldwic Cottage; the property was bequeathed to New Jersey in 1971 and is now managed as a historic house museum by the Friends of the Hermitage. The Hermitage is architecturally significant as the only known remaining Gothic Revival structure that can be definitively attributed to Ranlett and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

A 2025 Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation grant will help fund the preparation of a Preservation Plan and design documents to support the future preservation of the building and site.

The Hermitage didn’t sit quietly during the Revolution, it sat on the front line. 🇺🇸

Bergen County was a volatile borderland between British‑held NYC and Washington’s forces. Skirmishes, spies, and midnight riders were part of daily life here.

The Hermitage stood in the middle of it all. Come learn more on your next visit tour.
