Preston Place

Preston Place Preston Place was built in the 1860's. The property also has the foundation left of an old church. Preston Place has a rich and interesting history.

The property consists of the main house, the guest house (also built in the 1860's), a summer kitchen, a barn with a blacksmith room, and a general store with an attached western bar. While one might think that it looks like an old village, the fact is that the original owners built it for their own amusement. Anyone that has any information on Preston Place or any stories on its original owners are encouraged to contact the current owners via this page. Any info is greatly appreciated.

As far as I can tell I have 26 varieties of hostas and at least 480 plants. That number goes up every year and I have to estimate in some places because I have them so close to each other. There's so many varieties with just subtle differences it's hard to tell if it's more than 26. I also know only a couple varieties by name because most of them came nameless or we thinned them out from other people's yards. I have a grouping of miniature ones and I have the large Sum & Substance ones. Hostas are funny sometimes because some of them have huge almost 1ft across leaves one year and half the size the next. I'll post more pictures of them individually when they fill out more.

I'm up to 13 varieties of Sedum and plan on adding more. I'd have them everywhere if the deer would leave them alone. I've put some pictures of things in bloom right now. Just a very few of my hostas got a little frost damage but most of them are looking really good and I expect them to look better this year with the compost around them.

I was finally able to plant my annuals yesterday. All 130 of them in a few hours. The colors are dark to light yellow on the front and back of the flowerbed and dark to light pink on the sides. Instead of petunias I'm trying petchoas which are a petunia calibrachoa hybrid and are supposed to be a little tougher. I also have lantana, marigolds, vinca and annual dianthus. These past few days I have transplanted over 80 perennials, shoveled and spread at least 10 wheelbarrows of compost, put down over 20 bags of mulch, pulled most of the grass and weeds out of all the hosta beds, planted the vegetables and mowed and trimmed almost everything. I am sunburnt and sore but at least most of the yard work is done for a while. The hostas on either side of the front porch need to be dug up and the lily of the valley and wild violets taken out and fresh compost mixed in. They look smaller and I can tell they're struggling now and being choked out. We may or may not get to it this year because that's going to be a pain. Everything else is looking pretty good considering we were still getting nights in the 20s just a few days ago.

I'm still waiting to plant my annual flowers this year. The temps have been fluctuating like crazy for a couple months now and we're still having freezing nights. Most of the hostas are up but a few have frost damage and tonight and tomorrow aren't going to help anything. Some of the trees and bushes are affected too. Here's some pics of a few of my plants for now.

I haven't posted in a while because nothing much has been going on. Living in Wisconsin means you're only able to accomplish anything outside 5, maybe 6 if you're lucky, months of the year. It snows then melts then it snows alot and melts again. We've had very warm days followed by freezing temps the next day. It's been a strange Spring so far. This time of the year everything looks so dull and lifeless. Yesterday was sunny and still very windy but I was able to enjoy it a little while. Thankfully a month from now this will all be green again.

Refreshed the bathroom with dark and cozy colors. It's been 10 years since I painted it and it was looking rough. It really needed a new toilet and the sink was cracked. Don't believe people when they say dark colors make a room look smaller because this looks so nice and cozy and in no way feels smaller, even though it is a small bathroom already. We will put in a new shower and/or tub eventually. As usual we did everything ourselves 😁

Northern lights tonight. The camera shows them much more than the naked eye. Looking at the sky you can see a glow and some faint streaks and only very little color. The stars are very bright and beautiful tonight too ✨️
