The Friends of Bare Cove Park

The Friends of Bare Cove Park Bare Cove Park was deemed a Wildlife Preserve by the residents of Hingham. The park has miles of paved multi use trails along the Weymouth Back River.

Bare Cove Park is spread across nearly 500 acres beside the Weymouth Back River in Hingham, MA. The park has diverse plant and animal life. Dogs are welcome, but they must be leashed. The park is an exceptional area of river shoreline marshland, wetlands, open fields, and dense woods. Native Americans lived along the river (Bare Cove) for thousands of years. The US Government procured the land in

1902. The land became the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot. A former United States Navy ammunition depot located in Hingham, Massachusetts. At its peak, it employed over 2,400 people. From 1903 until 1961, The Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot was a major supplier of U.S. munitions, occupying 990 acres on the Weymouth Back River (in the section once known as The Hockley). In the mid 1950s, the site contained over 90 buildings, its own telephone exchange, and 15 cranes. The base was decommissioned in 1961, though the Navy held on to the property until 1971, when it was it was deemed surplus property by the DOI and turned over to the town of Hingham in the Federal Land to Parks Program. Today much of the site, 485 acres is now occupied by the town's Bare Cove Park. There is a wonderful Memorabilia Museum that captures the history of the land use in the Green Dockhouse building to explore on scheduled weekend days during the warmer months.

In 2023, the Hingham High Crew team lost four parents who were such pillars of support:
Kristen Grossman, Lynn Hart,
Todd Rubel, and Dan Dodd

In honor of these parents and their contributions to the Crew team and community,
the Class of 2023 is raising funds to place a memorial bench near the Back River in Bare Cove Park, Hingham,
a place near and dear to the entire crew community’s hearts.

​The Crew team at Hingham High has always been more than just a group of athletes. It’s a family, bound by shared goals, hard work, and the collective spirit of the river, lake, and ocean. Behind every practice, every race, and every early morning is the unwavering support of the team parents.
