The School Committee has spent months working on the FY27 school budget, and I wanted to give some context to the current budget and warrant discussions.
When the 2023 override passed, town leadership agreed to a 3.5% growth guideline for the school operating budget. At the same time, everyone acknowledged that special education costs are different.
Out-of-district placements, transportation, and specialized services are legally mandated, and those costs have been rising statewide. Because of that, it was agreed that these expenses would be treated separately. Funding these services is not only the right thing to do but it is a legal obligation and a commitment our community already made.
Over the past two years the district has already reduced about 26.2 positions while adjusting to enrollment and financial pressures. This budget conversation is happening in a system that has already made significant changes.
The Advisory Committee will be reviewing the proposed school budget and school facility warrant articles this Thursday. The committee will be asking questions and reviewing the details and this is an important chance for residents to hear the discussion.
