🌟 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT | DR. HEATHER “DR. H” HINSHELWOOD 🌟
Meet one of the newest members of the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island, Dr. Heather Hinshelwood—affectionately known by her patients as Dr. H!
Dr. H is a board-certified physician and Chief Medical Officer at Fraum Health, where she specializes in restorative and integrative medicine, longevity, and proactive wellness—helping people stay active, independent, and healthy throughout every stage of life.
Her path to Hilton Head includes an impressive career of both medicine and service. After earning her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine, Dr. H completed her Emergency Medicine residency at UF Shands Jacksonville. She has practiced emergency medicine at Colleton Medical Center and Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Her commitment to service extends well beyond her medical practice. 🇺🇸 Dr. H has served as a Medical Officer in the United States Navy since 2002, both on active duty and in the reserves, and currently holds the rank of Commander.
Sponsored by Club President Deborah Burt, Dr. H joined Rotary to become more connected to our community, meet new people, and expand her social circle.
She lives in Bluffton and practices on Main Street in Hilton Head. When she's not caring for patients or serving others, you'll likely find her enjoying CrossFit, boating, traveling, and spending time with her children, Brock and Teddy.
We’re excited to welcome Dr. H to our Rotary family and look forward to the energy, experience, and spirit of service she brings to our club.

💙 ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES — ROCS DAY IS COMING! 💙
The Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island is getting ready for our next ROCS Day — Rotarians Offering Community Service — on Saturday, September 26!
And this year, we’re inviting Rotarians, family members, friends, and members of our community to join us! 🙌
From 9:00 AM–12:00 PM, volunteers will spread out across Hilton Head Island to lend a hand to some of the wonderful organizations that do so much for our community.

📚 Investing in Beaufort County’s Students

Today, the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island welcomed Dr. Frank Rodriguez, Superintendent of the Beaufort County School District, who shared an exciting update on the progress being made throughout our local schools.

Named the 2025–26 South Carolina Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Rodriguez leads a district serving more than 20,000 students. He shared the district’s SEAS pillars — Support, Engagement, Achievement and Stewardship — and emphasized the importance of focusing on culture, systems and instruction, while providing students and teachers with high-quality instructional materials.

One area of significant progress has been supporting and retaining teachers. Beaufort County has moved from 53rd in South Carolina to #1 in teacher salaries, strengthening the district’s ability to attract and retain top talent.

The district’s long-term academic goals include 75% proficiency in English Language Arts, 75% in Math and a 92% graduation rate. An exciting milestone has already been reached: for the first time, Beaufort County’s graduation rate has exceeded 90%! 🎓

Dr. Rodriguez also highlighted the importance of stewardship. The 2019 bond referendum focused on safety, maintenance, playground and athletic improvements, with projects completed on time and on budget. The 2023 bond referendum is supporting major projects, including a new Hilton Head Island high school, a new Lady’s Island middle school and a new elementary school in Bluffton — all with zero millage increase.

Dr. Rodriguez shared that he is proud to serve Beaufort County and its students, and we appreciate his leadership and commitment to preparing our young people for successful futures.

We were also delighted to welcome visiting Rotarian Tod Jaggi from Livonia, Michigan, who has maintained perfect attendance at Rotary meetings. We’re always happy to welcome fellow Rotarians to Hilton Head Island!

🌟 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT | GARY M. REEDY 🌟
This week, we’re proud to shine our Member Spotlight on Gary M. Reedy, whose career and volunteer service reflect a lifelong commitment to improving the health and well-being of others.
Gary served as Chief Executive Officer of the American Cancer Society from 2015 until his retirement in 2021, leading the organization’s efforts to save lives and accelerate progress in cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and health equity. His connection to the American Cancer Society began more than 15 years before becoming CEO, when he first served as a volunteer leader. As a cancer survivor himself, Gary brought a deeply personal perspective to the organization’s lifesaving mission.
Before joining the American Cancer Society as CEO, Gary built a distinguished 37-year career in healthcare business, policy, and advocacy, including senior leadership roles at Johnson & Johnson, SmithKline Beecham, and Centocor.
Retirement certainly hasn’t meant slowing down when it comes to service! Gary continues to volunteer with the American Cancer Society and serves with several organizations, including Volunteers in Medicine, where he is Vice-Chair, as well as The Goodness Web, Tobacco-Free Portfolios, The Carter Center’s Board of Councilors, and the MMM Tech Advisory Council.
Gary is a graduate of Emory & Henry University and received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Arcadia University. He and his wife, Cindy, call Hilton Head Island home and are the proud parents of two adult daughters, Katie and Stephanie.
We are fortunate to have Gary bring his experience, leadership, and passion for service to the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island.

💙 162 MEMBERS STRONG — AND GROWING!
Membership Director Laura Christenson shared an exciting membership update with the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island—and the biggest takeaway was simple:
Membership isn’t just about numbers. It’s about people.
Our club was founded on March 17, 1967, and nearly 60 years later, we continue to grow and welcome new generations of Rotarians. We are currently the second-largest Rotary club in District 7770 and the largest club in the district’s “Growth” group.
Last year, we welcomed 21 new members, finishing the Rotary year with 161 members. This year, our goal is to reach 167 members and 4.5% growth.
But reaching that goal takes all of us.
Laura reminded us that every Rotarian is part of the membership committee. We grow by:
• Sponsoring exceptional people
• Inviting friends and colleagues to a meeting, social or service project
• Introducing prospective members to Discover Rotary
• Making guests feel welcome
• Staying connected with new members after they join
And perhaps the most important goal of all:
Make every member feel valued. Keep our service visible. Welcome guests like family. Keep Rotary fun. And build a culture everyone wants to be part of.
With 162 members strong, we’re proud of where we’ve been—and even more excited about where we’re going.

🌍 Hilton Head Island Rotary in Tanzania 🇹🇿

Rotarian Sonja Friedman recently joined a group of Rotarians from across the United States on a cultural trip to Tanzania in July. The journey included an unforgettable safari, meaningful cultural experiences, and an important community service project.

One of the greatest needs identified was access to reading glasses. Many older adults in Tanzania struggle to read, while others need glasses to perform the close-up work required to make and sell crafts—an important source of income for their families.

Through donations from World Vision, reading glasses were obtained and distributed through several Catholic churches in Tanzania. The impact was immediate and meaningful, helping community members read more comfortably, work more effectively, and maintain their independence.

The Hilton Head Island Rotary is proud to share service that connects communities across the world. 💙

❤️ Warm Hearts, Full Plates: A Student Making a Difference

We were inspired by Zoe Biles, a senior at Hilton Head Prep and also a member of Interact, who shared the story behind Warm Hearts, Full Plates.

After completing more than 170 hours of community service with Neighborhood Outreach Connection (NOC), Zoe noticed something she couldn’t ignore—children arriving during cold weather without warm coats.

As a 10th grader, she decided to do something about it and created Warm Hearts, Full Plates, an initiative providing new, gift-wrapped coats and Thanksgiving meals to underserved children and families.

This year, Zoe’s goal is to reach families at all six NOC locations across Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and Beaufort, providing 350 new coats and 240 Thanksgiving meals. She has already raised more than $25,000 toward this year’s effort!

❤️ $40 provides a new coat for a student.
🍽️ $80 provides a Thanksgiving meal for a family.

What impressed us most was seeing a young person recognize a need and turn compassion into action. Zoe is a wonderful reminder that service has no age requirement.

🌍 Building Global Connections Through Rotary Youth Exchange

One of the many ways Rotary creates lasting impact is through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, giving young people the opportunity to experience a new culture, build lifelong friendships, and see the world from a whole new perspective.

The Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island is proud to be an active part of this incredible program!

🇮🇹 We are excited to welcome Miguel Matos from Bolzano, Italy, who will be spending the year with us here in the Hilton Head Island community.

🇫🇷 And our outbound exchange student, Sophie Bigda, has safely arrived in France to begin her own year of adventure, learning, and new experiences. Notice her creative artwork on her jeans!

Two students. Two countries. One shared Rotary experience. 💙🌎

We can’t wait to follow Miguel and Sophie’s journeys throughout the year!
