Second Helpings

Second Helpings Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue & distribution network, striving to eliminate hunger in the SC Lowcountry. Hunger has a local address.

Each year, we collect and distribute some 3 million lbs of food. We are a funded UWLC (United Way of the Lowcountry) partner agency. One in seven people, and one in five children in South Carolina, struggle with hunger. Our 300 volunteers supply 50 nonprofit food pantries, soup kitchens, agencies and churches in Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties. Together, we provide more than 2.3 million meals per year to feed our local hungry.

September is Hunger Action Month โ€” a time to recognize that hunger is happening right here in our own community.

More than 37,000 people across Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties face food insecurity, and the need continues to grow.

Every week, Second Helpings helps connect more than 14,000 neighbors with food through our network of local food pantries, soup kitchens, and nonprofit partners.

This month, we are asking our community to take action: Donate, volunteer, share our mission, or simply help more people understand the need.

Together, we can rescue food, fight hunger, and deliver hope. ๐Ÿงก

Fighting hunger is about more than filling empty stomachs.

It's about making sure children have fresh fruits and vegetables, seniors have nutritious meals, and families have access to healthy food they may not otherwise be able to afford.

For 10 years, Second Helpings' Healthy Food Initiative has helped make that possible by providing more than 1.8 million pounds of healthy food across the Lowcountry.
You can help continue that impact.

While we are making progress rescuing and purchasing more food, the need for food continues to grow.

Feeding America now estimates that more than 37,000 people in Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties experience food insecurity, an 18% increase from its previous estimate.

At the same time, fewer South Carolinians are receiving SNAP benefits, and many working households are facing difficult choices between groceries, housing, utilities, prescriptions and other necessities.

Second Helpings is responding by rescuing and delivering more food where demand is greatest, purchasing healthy food when donations aren't enough, and helping our agency partners prepare for increased need.

Food insecurity can affect our neighbors in ways we don't always see. Please share this post and help us continue the conversation.

A few minutes could help bring $5,000 to Second Helpings.

FWDG is now accepting nominations for its 2026 Season of Giving, and twelve local nonprofits will each receive a $5,000 gift.

If you believe in the work Second Helpings does across the Lowcountry, we would be grateful for your nomination.

A $5,000 gift could help purchase approximately 5,000 pounds of fresh, healthy food and help keep our refrigerated trucks on the road rescuing food and delivering it, free of charge, to local food pantries and nonprofit partners.

Changes to SNAP could mean more Lowcountry families turning to local food pantries for help.

Second Helpings Executive Director Amy Colin recently shared how these changes could impact our region and why local food assistance organizations are preparing for increased need.

Our partner agencies already serve more than 14,000 people each week.

Thank you to WJCL 22 for helping bring attention to this important issue.

This is the kind of rescue we love to see. ๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿฅฌ

Fresh fruits and vegetables can be some of the hardest foods for local pantries to keep in stock, and some of the most important.

Through food rescue and our Healthy Food Initiative, Second Helpings works to make more fresh, nutritious food available to our agency partners throughout the Lowcountry.

Sometimes that means rescuing a truckload of produce. Other times, it means purchasing healthy food from local farmers and partners when donations aren't enough. Either way, the goal is the same: more nutritious food for our neighbors.

Looking for a hands-on way to give back right here in the Lowcountry?

Second Helpings volunteers ride our trucks, rescue food from local donors, and deliver it directly to food pantries serving our neighbors.

You donโ€™t need special experience, just a little time and a willingness to help.
Whether you volunteer regularly or jump in when your schedule allows, a few hours can make a real difference.

Ever wonder what happens after food is rescued?

๐Ÿฅ• Food is donated by grocery stores, farms, restaurants and other local partners.
๐Ÿšš Second Helpings volunteers pick it up.
๐Ÿ“ฆ Our trucks deliver it directly to local food pantries and agencies.
โค๏ธ From there, it reaches neighbors throughout the Lowcountry, many times is on the dinner table the same day.

Last year alone, more than 500 volunteers helped make this process happen week after week, nearly every day of the year.

It is a simple idea with a big impact: rescue food that would otherwise go to waste and get it to people who can use it.
