As we head into summer, it’s extra important to practice smart irrigation.

Remember: Don’t water during the heat of the day. Stick to dawn or dusk to avoid rapid evaporation.

Please also follow Hilton Head’s town ordinance which limits irrigation to no more than twice per week.

: The PSD held a ribbon cutting for our new Native Plant Demonstration Garden on May 30!

The garden is a partnership among the PSD, Hilton Head Audubon Society, and Lowcountry Master Gardener Association. It features a variety of plants that are native to the Hilton Head area and is a great way to encourage and protect local birds.

The ribbon cutting drew more than 50 attendees from Hilton Head & Bluffton. We’re excited to share this new garden with the community, and hope it’ll encourage locals to create their own native plant & pollinator gardens at home.

We also want to give a quick shoutout to PSD Water Quality Supervisor Sarah Hickman, who played a key role in bringing the garden to life. And to the HHI-Bluffton Junior Leadership Class of 2026, which helped plant the garden.

Want to visit the garden yourself? Stop by our facility at 21 Oak Park Drive anytime between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday - Friday.

❗ PSA: Hilton Head Island residents are asked to pause irrigation on June 17 & 18.

Hilton Head PSD and Broad Creek PSD are performing important upgrades to the island’s drinking water treatment facility and are asking customers not to run irrigation systems during this time. While water quality will not be affected, temporarily reducing irrigation use will help ease demand on the system while work is underway.

As a reminder, island irrigation is limited to two days per week:
✔️ Even-numbered addresses: Tuesdays & Saturdays
✔️ Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesdays & Sundays
✔️ Commercial properties: Mondays & Thursdays

From our General Manager, Pete Nardi: “The temporary irrigation cessation request is out of an abundance of caution in order to help minimize any impacts on the water distribution systems. This is a good reminder of the tremendous value of water to our island and how we all share a responsibility to use water efficiently at all times.”

🌊 Today is World Ocean Day! 🐢

Join the global movement to protect our oceans and safeguard the future of marine life! Here’s how you can help:

💧Conserve water at home

💧Reduce plastic use — our sea turtles will thank you!

💧Make sure your irrigation system isn’t watering the driveway, road or sidewalk — which can lead to pollution from runoff

💧Properly dispose of unused medications in Beaufort County drop-off boxes

💧Participate in a beach sweep — or just bring gloves & a trash bag to your next beach outing and pick up any trash you see (if it’s safe to do so!)

June is National Rivers Month.

In Beaufort County, many of our waterways are unique — because the rivers flow into the ocean, they contain brackish water, a mix of fresh and salt water.

Which means you can find unique wildlife in our rivers — from alligators to dolphins.

To protect this wildlife, we all need to work together to help keep these waterways clean.

Here’s how you can help:
1. Protect water quality where you live. Simple actions at home—picking up after your pet, installing a rain barrel, and using fertilizers sparingly—can reduce water pollution in local rivers and streams.
2. Save water at home! Water efficiency at home helps maintain the flow in local rivers and streams.
3. Lend a hand! Participate in a local river cleanup or volunteer to help monitor water quality.

Looking for a Father’s Day gift idea?

If Dad loves his lawn — or his garden — upgrade his irrigation system with the WaterSense Label!

WaterSense Label irrigation controllers improve water efficiency while giving your grass or plants only the water they need.

(P.S. - They’ll also help you adhere to HHI’s irrigation ordinance since they have working rain gauges).

It’s a gift that’ll make Dad’s life easier, all while helping save water.

As the weather heats up, make sure you’re following Hilton Head’s local ordinance for irrigation.

That means limiting your water use for irrigation to twice per week — and making sure your irrigation system has a working rain gauge.
