Today, our community gathered at Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue Headquarters to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Together, we remembered the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including civilians and the first responders who ran toward danger to save others. Among those killed were 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers.

Deputy Fire Chief Joheida Fister served as master of ceremonies and shared reflections on September 11, 2001, and how that day shaped her life, career and commitment to service.

Mayor Alan Perry offered remarks, and retired Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jeffrey Hartberger reflected on the sacrifices made that day and the importance of honoring those who answered the call to help others.

We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who joined us for this meaningful ceremony. Twenty-five years later, we remember those we lost, honor those who answered the call to serve and continue to carry forward the spirit of unity and compassion that emerged in the days that followed.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸
