MOUNTED MANTRACKING — THE TRACKER FROM THE SADDLE
Mounted mantracking is not simply tracking while riding a horse.
It is a specialized skill that combines advanced horsemanship, visual tracking, terrain interpretation, observation, mobility, and the ability to read the ground from an elevated position.
For centuries, horses have given scouts, patrolmen and trackers something a person on foot does not have: height, mobility and endurance. From the saddle, the trained eye can look across and over vegetation, brush and uneven ground, opening a larger visual field. Historically, mounted scouts were expected to observe terrain, recognize signs of movement and report what they discovered. Military history also records the use of trackers as a source of intelligence and reconnaissance.
But there is a serious misconception:
A horse does not make someone a mounted tracker.
The rider must first be a competent horseman. Then he must develop the eyes and mind of a tracker.
A mounted tracker learns to read the ground while the horse is moving. He must recognize changes in vegetation, disturbed soil, displaced stones, broken or bent vegetation, impressions, crossings, concentrations of sign and changes in the environment—while constantly understanding that the horse itself is moving through and interacting with the terrain.
That creates a completely different tracking problem.
On foot, the tracker can stop, kneel, change his viewing angle and examine a sign closely.
From the saddle, the tracker must learn to read sign at distance, recognize patterns quickly, control the horse, maintain awareness of the surrounding terrain and know when a sign is important enough to slow down or dismount and investigate.
That is where advanced mounted tracking begins.
LAW ENFORCEMENT
For law enforcement, mounted tracking can provide capabilities that complement conventional patrol operations.
Mounted units have historically been valuable because horses can cover terrain that can be difficult for vehicles and can provide an elevated observation platform. Modern police mounted units continue to demonstrate the value of horses for patrol and difficult terrain.
A trained mounted tracker can bring another layer to that capability:
the ability to interpret what the terrain is saying.
SEARCH & RESCUE
For SAR, the advantage can be enormous in large or rugged areas.
A horse can carry the tracker farther, reduce physical fatigue and provide access through terrain where vehicles may be ineffective. The U.S. military has documented mounted horse operations covering difficult terrain and large search areas, including an operation in which military horses helped survey terrain that was difficult for troops on foot to cover efficiently.
But speed alone is not the objective.
Finding sign is the objective.
Understanding sign is the objective.
Following the evidence is the objective.
MILITARY TRACKING
Military history demonstrates that tracking has been used as an intelligence and reconnaissance skill, including in environments where understanding the movement of people across terrain was critical. U.S. Army material has specifically described tracking as a viable skill set and connected tracker observations with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
Mounted tracking adds another dimension to that capability: mobility combined with visual observation.
Historically, mounted military formations were used for scouting, patrolling and pursuit, and scouts were trained to recognize signs of opposing forces and track movements.
The lesson has not changed:
Technology can increase what a team can see.
A trained tracker understands what he is seeing.
THIS IS A TRAINED DISCIPLINE
Mounted mantracking requires much more than riding ability.
The student must develop:
Advanced horsemanship
Visual tracking from an elevated position
Terrain and vegetation interpretation
Recognition of subtle disturbance
Track and sign identification
Observation at distance
Understanding of environmental change
The ability to transition between riding and detailed ground examination
Discipline and patience
The ability to recognize when the trail is becoming weak
The ability to preserve and return to the last known sign
The horse becomes part of the system.
The rider controls the horse.
The tracker controls the investigation.
The terrain provides the evidence.
That is mounted mantracking.

Because once you understand tracking, you begin to realize something important:
The horse carries you across the country.

THE GROUND STARTS HIDING YOUR TRACK THE MOMENT YOU MAKE IT.
This morning I took a short walk. When I returned to where I had started, I stopped and studied my own trail.
The sign was there.
Bruised vegetation. Displaced rocks. Bent stems. Disturbed ground.
But something was different.
The weather had changed, and the vegetation was already beginning to recover.
That is something a tracker learns with experience:
Sign does not wait for you.
The moment a person passes, the land begins to erase the evidence.
Vegetation rises. Moisture moves through the soil. Wind shifts debris. Light changes the appearance of the ground. A bent stem slowly returns toward its natural position.
To the untrained eye, the trail begins to disappear.
To the trained tracker, the changes themselves become evidence.
This is why you cannot become a tracker by simply memorizing footprints.
You must learn the ground.
You must learn vegetation.
You must learn disturbance, pressure, displacement, recovery and time.
And most importantly, you must keep looking.
After more than 50 years of tracking, I still go back and study my own sign.
Not because I have stopped learning.
Because a real tracker knows there is always another lesson waiting in the spoor.
The old trackers understood something many forget today:
The ground tells the story once.
Then it begins erasing it.
Your job is to read it before it is gone.

FOOT & BODY MECHANICS IN MANTRACKING
Learning to Read the Human Movement Inside the Footprint
A tracker who depends on footprints must understand far more than the shape of a shoe.
Every footprint is a record of movement.
The foot entered the ground, accepted weight, transferred that weight, stabilized the body, and eventually released from the ground. During that process, the foot, ankle, knee, hips, pelvis, and upper body all contribute to what is left behind.
If we learn only to recognize a footprint, we are identifying footwear.
If we learn the mechanics that created the footprint, we begin reading the person.
1. THE HEEL — WHERE THE STEP BEGINS
The heel is often the first major contact point during normal walking.
The tracker should study:
Where the heel contacted the ground
The direction of the heel
The depth of the impression
Compression of the substrate
Displacement of soil or loose material
The relationship between the heel and the remainder of the foot
The heel is not simply an identification point.
It is the beginning of the mechanical story.
2. THE FOOT PLATE — WHERE THE FOOT CARRIES WEIGHT
The main supporting portion of the foot can reveal how the person's weight was distributed.
Look beyond the tread pattern.
Ask:
Where was the ground compressed? Where was material displaced? Where was pressure concentrated?
A footprint can contain different levels of pressure from one part of the foot to another.
That difference matters.
The tracker must learn to distinguish a simple tread impression from pressure and deformation produced by body weight.
3. THE FOOT ROLL
The foot does not necessarily load the ground as one flat object.
During walking, the body progresses over the supporting foot.
The tracker should learn to recognize the sequence:
HEEL → MIDFOOT → FOREFOOT → TOES
The exact appearance will vary with footwear, terrain, speed, substrate, and individual gait.
The important lesson is to understand progression of weight, not memorize one perfect footprint.
4. THE OUTSIDE EDGE
The outside portion of the foot can become an important reference when the substrate preserves pressure differences.
Study:
Edge compression
Soil displacement
Weight transfer
Relationship to the center of the track
Changes from one step to the next
Never interpret the outside edge alone.
A tracker reads relationships, not isolated marks.
5. THE ARCH / MIDFOOT
The midfoot is often misunderstood.
Depending on the footwear and surface, the arch may appear clearly, faintly, or not at all.
Therefore:
Do not assume that what you cannot see did not happen.
Footwear construction, substrate, pressure, and movement can all influence what becomes visible.
6. THE FOREFOOT — WHERE THE STORY CHANGES
As the body progresses forward, loading moves toward the forefoot.
The tracker should begin looking for evidence of:
Increasing forefoot pressure
Compression
Forward displacement
Changes in substrate deformation
The transition toward toe-off
This is where the foot begins changing from primarily supporting the body to helping propel the body forward.
7. THE TOES — THE FINAL PART OF THE STEP
The toes can provide valuable information when the ground preserves them.
Look for:
Toe impressions
Toe direction
Separation
Compression
Depth
Individual toe characteristics
Final pressure
Direction of release
The toes are not simply decoration at the front of the footprint.
They can record the final phase of the step.
8. THE BIG TOE — THE LEADER
The big toe deserves special attention.
The hallux plays an important role during the final portion of normal gait and propulsion.
For the tracker, the big toe can become a useful reference for studying:
direction + final loading + release
This is why I teach the concept:
THE BIG TOE IS THE LEADER.
But a tracker must not make a conclusion from the big toe alone.
The heel, foot plate, forefoot, toes, track direction, and succeeding tracks must agree.
One feature is evidence.
Multiple features become interpretation.
9. TOE SPEED
The relationship between the toe area and the remainder of the track can help a tracker study how the foot was released from the ground.
The important question is not simply:
“Where are the toes?”
It is:
“How did the foot leave the ground?”
A person walking, accelerating, climbing, descending, slipping, or changing pace can produce different mechanical evidence.
Toe evidence becomes much more valuable when studied across a sequence of tracks rather than as one isolated impression.
10. TOE SPREAD
When the substrate allows individual toes to be seen, toe spread can provide additional information.
Study:
Direction
Separation
Pressure
Depth
Individual toe placement
Changes between left and right feet
But remember:
Barefoot sign and footwear sign are not interpreted the same way.
Shoes can hide, distort, or completely change the appearance of the underlying foot mechanics.
11. TOE-OFF
Toe-off is the final portion of the foot's contact with the ground.
The foot transitions from supporting the body toward leaving the surface.
This is one of the most important concepts for a tracker to understand because the final portion of the track can help reveal direction of movement and propulsion.
The tracker should study the forefoot and toe area for:
compression → displacement → release
12. THE ANKLE
The ankle is the connection between the foot and lower leg.
It influences how the foot accepts and transfers load.
Changes in ankle position can influence:
Foot angle
Pressure distribution
Balance
Track depth
Foot placement
Relationship between heel and forefoot
An experienced tracker learns to recognize that a footprint is connected to the leg above it.
13. PRONATION AND SUPINATION
These terms describe movements and adaptations of the foot.
The tracker does not need to become a medical specialist, but should understand the basic mechanical principle:
The foot adapts to the surface and manages the transfer of body weight.
Those movements can influence how pressure appears in a footprint.
Again, never diagnose a person from a track.
We read evidence; we do not invent explanations.
14. THE KNEE
The knee influences the entire movement chain.
Changes in knee movement can affect:
Stride length
Step length
Body height over the track
Balance
Weight transfer
Gait
A tracker should pay attention when the gait suddenly changes.
The question becomes:
What changed in the person's movement?
15. THE HIP
The hip controls much of the relationship between the lower body and the trunk.
Hip movement contributes to:
Stride
Leg swing
Balance
Direction
Lateral movement
Changes in gait
Two people wearing the same shoe can leave different tracks because the bodies driving those shoes are different.
16. THE PELVIS
The pelvis connects the lower body to the upper body and plays an important role in walking mechanics.
The tracker may not see the pelvis directly in the ground.
But its influence can appear indirectly through:
Stride
Step width
Foot angle
Weight transfer
Left/right relationships
Changes in gait
This is where the tracker begins moving beyond the footprint itself and starts understanding whole-body movement.
17. BODY LEAN
Body position can influence foot loading.
A person leaning forward, backward, or laterally may produce different pressure and placement patterns.
Consider:
Uphill movement
Downhill movement
Acceleration
Deceleration
Uneven terrain
Carrying a load
Avoiding an obstacle
The same person may produce different sign because the movement has changed.
18. STRIDE
Stride is not simply a measurement.
A tracker should ask:
Why did the stride change?
Possible environmental or movement explanations can include:
Terrain
Slope
Obstacles
Speed
Fatigue
Load
Direction changes
Surface conditions
Never automatically interpret a shorter or longer stride as one specific behavior.
The track sequence must support the conclusion.
19. STEP LENGTH
Step length gives the tracker another measurement of movement.
Study the relationship between:
left foot → right foot → left foot → right foot
Look for consistency and changes.
A change can be more important than the measurement itself.
Change is evidence.
20. STRADDLE
Straddle is the relationship between the left and right tracks around the person's line of travel.
Study:
Distance between tracks
Changes in width
Symmetry
Direction
Changes caused by terrain
Straddle can help the tracker understand how the person was moving through the terrain.
21. PITCH
Pitch describes the orientation and progression of the foot in relation to the direction of travel.
The tracker should study:
Foot angle
Left/right differences
Changes in angle
Direction of travel
Changes through turns
Again:
Do not read one footprint. Read the sequence.
22. PRESSURE RELEASES
One of the most important principles in mantracking is understanding what happens when weight is removed from the ground.
A foot does not simply appear and disappear.
Weight is applied.
Weight moves.
Weight is released.
That process can create pressure releases, displacement, compression, and other subtle sign.
This is why the tracker must learn to look at:
what was compressed, what moved, what was displaced, and what remained undisturbed.
23. THE FOOTPRINT IS A THREE-DIMENSIONAL EVENT
A beginner often sees a footprint as a picture.
An experienced tracker sees:
depth + pressure + displacement + direction + sequence.
The ground is not simply recording the shoe.
It is recording the interaction between:
PERSON + FOOT + BODY WEIGHT + MOVEMENT + TERRAIN + SURFACE
That is the real lesson.
24. WHY EVERY TRACKER NEEDS THIS KNOWLEDGE
Foot and body mechanics should not be reserved for a small group of advanced trackers.
Every tracker who intends to follow human sign should understand the fundamentals.
You cannot reliably interpret what you see in the ground if you do not understand how the human body created it.
Learn the:
heel.
plate.
arch.
foot roll.
forefoot.
toes.
big toe.
toe speed.
toe-off.
ankle.
knee.
hip.
pelvis.
stride.
step.
straddle.
pitch.
pressure.
pressure release.
Then put them together.
THE TRACK IS THE RESULT.
THE BODY IS THE CAUSE.
THE TRACKER'S JOB IS TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP.
Don't just follow footprints.

Tactical Tracking for Military & Law Enforcement

Tactical tracking in operational contexts is not a hobbyist pursuit; it is an intelligence and force-protection function. Tracks and sign are raw data; behavioral analysis converts that data into predictions about intent, capability, and likely routes. The tracker’s job is to interpret the story the ground tells and to communicate clear, actionable risk assessments so the team can prepare, maneuver, and react safely.

Reading behavior from sign means observing the how, not just the what. Small variations in stride, pressure, spacing and repetition reveal mindset. Irregular stride lengths, overlapping prints, abrupt direction changes and out-of-pattern toe scrapes suggest a subject who is hurried, confused or panicked — someone who may make mistakes or leave additional sign and whose movements will be unpredictable. Light, high-stepped prints and a pattern that avoids open ground indicate a subject prioritizing concealment; such a person will likely move slowly through cover and attempt to evade rather than engage. Consistent stride, evenly spaced prints and purposeful use of contours or terrain suggest a practiced mover; experienced subjects frequently leave minimal unnecessary sign and may intentionally manipulate the ground to mislead. Multiple overlapping sets that terminate at dead ends, or disturbances beyond what is necessary to travel, are classic indicators of deception or counter-tracking; when these appear, expand your search pattern and watch for secondary scenes.

Physical condition drives performance and decision-making, and a tracker must identify those cues quickly to predict limitations. Shallow prints, slipping, dragging toes and compacted rest sites indicate fatigue; a fatigued subject will be slower and more predictable, more likely to stop and more vulnerable to containment and observation. Limping, asymmetric pressure and evidence of improvised splints point to injury; an injured subject has reduced mobility, may rely on companions or concealment, and often chooses nearby shelter — this elevates the priority of rapid location and medical threat assessment. Deep, repeated impressions from heavy loads, equipment marks, and signs of cargo transfer reveal a subject carrying significant gear; heavy load reduces speed and agility and tilts likely movement toward easier routes and vehicle rendezvous points.

Telling a novice from a pro is essential. Novices typically move with erratic routes, frequent stops, obvious mistakes such as revisiting the same spot, and limited use of cover. Experienced subjects move with economy: minimal unnecessary sign, purposeful use of terrain features such as spurs and gullies, camouflaged bivouac sites and clean road or stream crossings. Treat experienced subjects as higher threat — they are more likely to employ ambushes, b***y traps or planned extractions.

Turn sign into likely next moves using a simple decision framework: State plus Constraints plus Options equals Likely Move. The subject’s mental and physical state — stressed, calm, injured — combined with constraints like time of day, weather, terrain and the presence of civilians, define the options available: routes, nearby cover, water or food sources and vehicle access. From that synthesis identify decision points — predictable locations where the subject must choose a route, such as road junctions, stream fords or saddles in a ridge. Those nodes are where overwatch, observation and containment will be most effective.

Prediction is only useful when the team acts on it with clear roles and communications. When sign indicates imminent contact, the tracker supplies a brief, prioritized report that includes location, last sign time estimate, behavioral assessment and recommended action: observe, contain or approach with overwatch. Support elements should move to prepared positions such as concealed overwatch or quick reaction posts. Expect the subject to attempt to dictate engagement timing; approach with controlled movement that uses terrain for cover and avoids predictable routes. Overwatch and concealment allow the team to observe likely funnels, and containment should be prioritized to isolate egress routes. Prepare non-lethal options and medical readiness because an injured subject may require immediate triage.

The tracker must move quietly and minimize additional disturbance to sign while reassessing frequently and updating the team in real time. If the subject appears trained, avoid single-person pursuit; instead use coordinated linkups and maneuvers. Communication must be concise and standardized: a spoken or written report should say exactly where the last sign was, the observed tempo and physical clues, an assessment of behavior, and the recommended immediate action.

Trackers must operate within the rules of engagement and know legal thresholds for pursuit and use of force. Preserve evidence: tracks and associated sign are often admissible and should be documented with photos, sketches and GPS. Minimize collateral harm by planning for civilian presence on likely routes and by prioritizing de-escalation when contact is likely.

Training should be realistic and scenario based. Short decision-point exercises teach the tracker to read behavior and place overwatch. Medium exercises that simulate multi-node pursuit, staged rest points and an injured subject build skills for containment and casualty extraction under pressure. Longer exercises that combine night tracking with canine teams, ISR feeds and comms fusion train teams to integrate sign, sensor data and real-time intelligence. After every drill conduct an after-action review focused on prediction accuracy, communication clarity and team response.

In the field, carry a simple but disciplined routine. Record the time, location and compass bearing of the last sign. Note tempo, stride, pressure and any associated evidence such as drops, scuffs or scent. Classify behavior — stressed, evasive, trained or injured — and identify the nearest decision points, water sources and likely vehicle access. Recommend immediate actions: observe, contain or approach with support, and document everything with photos, sketches and GPS while preserving primary sign.

Two short examples illustrate the method. A fatigued solo subject may leave shallow prints and a nearby rest site. In that case the prediction is for a pause of minutes to an hour and an eventual move toward the easiest route to a road; covert observation down-slope and a rapid response team on the nearby exit are appropriate. A trained suspect who lays overlapping false trails and then makes a clean crossing of a dry wash is likely attempting to break the track and use gullied terrain to mask movement; the immediate actions are to deploy surveillance, check likely extraction points and avoid single-tracker approaches.

Tracking in tactical environments blends craft, analysis and discipline. The tracker’s greatest value lies in translating ground truth into reliable predictions and succinct, actionable guidance for the team. Train decision frameworks, rehearse react-to-contact procedures, and operate within legal and ethical bounds. The tracks tell the story; your role is to read it, say it plainly, and give your team what it needs to act.

Integrated Tracker and K9 Operations in Search and Rescue
The most effective search and rescue operations occur when human trackers and SAR K9 teams operate together as a single, integrated resource. Each discipline works from a different sensory perspective, and neither is sufficient on its own. When trackers and K9 teams share information and work the same line of sign, they produce a more complete and reliable understanding of a missing person’s movement and behavior.
Human trackers interpret physical evidence left on the ground, including footprints, displaced vegetation, broken branches, and other disturbances. Through this sign, trackers establish direction of travel, pace, and behavioral indicators such as fatigue, injury, hesitation, or intent. This interpretation provides critical context for why a subject may have chosen certain routes or terrain features.
SAR K9 teams operate in a different sensory domain. Dogs detect scent that is invisible and imperceptible to humans, including ground disturbance odor, airborne scent, and skin rafts. The handler cannot see or smell this scent and must rely entirely on the dog’s behavior and changes in character. In this sense, the handler is effectively blind and dependent on the dog’s ability to interpret the scent picture.
When trackers and K9 teams work together at the starting point, the tracker confirms the presence of human sign and establishes direction of travel while the K9 confirms scent viability and subject relevance. This early collaboration reduces the risk of following the wrong subject, working contaminated scent, or committing resources in the wrong direction.
As the team progresses along the line of travel, trackers maintain continuity of visible sign and interpret terrain-based movement decisions. At the same time, the K9 provides information about scent strength, drift, pooling, or loss caused by environmental factors such as wind, moisture, vegetation, or time. When a dog deviates from visible sign, the tracker’s understanding of terrain and human behavior helps determine whether the deviation is consistent with how a person would move, rather than assuming error by either discipline.
At points of loss or uncertainty, the integration becomes especially critical. Trackers communicate changes in sign quality, stride, and behavioral indicators, while handlers communicate changes in the dog’s behavior, confidence, and scent picture. All observations are treated as operational data. No discipline dominates the decision-making process, and no single sensory system is considered superior.
