The Newark Bronze Shields, an association of African American Police Officers, and the Vulcan Pioneers, an association of Black Firefighters, awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships to 10 college-bound students, continuing the legacy and traditions established by the founders of these historic organizations during the Civil Rights Movement.

In addition to recognizing the scholarship recipients, the two public safety groups honored Community Service Officers from the Newark Police Division and members of the Newark Fire Division, for their commitment to safeguarding the residents and visitors of Newark.

The event also featured a presentation of the inaugural Newark Bronze Shields Legacy Builder Award to Sequoya Jones, also known as Miss Kali KOUTURE, in recognition of over two decades of service, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and investment in support of Newark’s young people through her Sew With Kali program.
