Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and the membership of the Union County Sheriff’s Office, as they mourn the loss of one of their own, Officer Joseph DeVito.

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Union County Sheriff’s Office announces the tragic passing of Sheriff’s Officer Joseph DeVito, who lost his life this morning in a motor vehicle accident.

Officer DeVito was a dedicated member of the Sheriff’s Office who served with honor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the community. His loss is deeply felt by his colleagues, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation by the New Jersey State Police. No further details are available at this time.

“We are devastated by the loss of Officer DeVito,” said Sheriff Peter Corvelli. “He was not only a valued member of our department, but also a respected colleague and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Union County Sheriff’s Office asks the public to keep Officer DeVito’s family, loved ones, and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this tragic loss.

The Hillside Police Department participated in the 2026 Law Enforcement Recruitment Fair at Kean University today. We had the opportunity to spend the day with those who will one day become the next generation of Law Enforcement professionals. This annual event featured State, Municipal, County, and Federal agencies from across the United States. Thank you to Kean University for hosting and to Union County Prosecutor's Office for helping organize this whole event. We’ll see you again in 2027!

The members of the Hillside Police Department extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Union County Sheriffs Officer James Gritschke, as well as to the members of the Union County Sheriff's Office, following his unexpected passing. Rest in peace, Officer Gritschke.

Today, the Union County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of one of our own, Officer James Gritschke.

Officer Gritschke was a valued member of our Sheriff’s Office family, and his passing is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His service and dedication to the people of Union County will always be remembered.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Gritschke’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time.
We ask the community to please keep his loved ones and the members of the Union County Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts and respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.

🚨 HILLSIDE POLICE DEPARTMENT – SNOW REMOVAL NOTICE 🚨

To ensure effective snow removal operations, alternate side parking regulations will be strictly enforced tomorrow.

❄️ No vehicles shall be parked on any street where “Emergency No Parking for Snow Removal” signs are posted.
❄️ Vehicles in violation will be subject to enforcement action, including summons and towing.

These measures are necessary to allow our Department of Public Works to properly clear roadways and maintain safe travel conditions for all residents.

We respectfully ask for your cooperation and assistance in moving your vehicles accordingly.

Thank you for helping us keep our streets safe and clear.

This means no travel on ANY roads, state, county, or township streets, including here in Hillside.

Please stay off the roads. Let first responders and DPW do their jobs safely.
