Hope Harbor Hillsdale's Opportunity to Provide Empowerment with transitional housing and full wrap around services in a sober-living environment

06/01/2026

We want to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the incredible leadership Missy DesJardin has shown throughout her time leading our sober transitional housing mission.

Missy has gone above and beyond in preparing our team for the future, ensuring that the foundation she built will continue to support and strengthen our mission for years to come. The dedication she gave to see this through since the formation of Camp Hope in April 2023 will never be forgotten. Through her vision, compassion, and tireless work ethic, she helped create stability, growth, and hope for so many individuals in recovery and transition.

Missy has resigned as Executive Director of HOPE Harbor so she can step back full-time into her original mission at Hillsdale Community Thrift. We celebrate the impact she has made and the countless ways she has prepared us for the next chapter. Her leadership has equipped us with the tools, structure, and confidence needed to continue moving forward successfully. Our board is fully committed to the success of HOPE Harbor and every neighbor that stays with us. The board will lead us forward while we search for our next Executive Director.

We are blessed to have the continued help and support from Hillsdale Community Thrift. This transition will allow Missy to return her focus to one leading role at HCT instead of carrying the responsibility of two demanding missions at once. This will also allow Missy to spend more valuable time focusing on her family as so much time was sacrificed away from them.

We are so excited for our neighbor, Ryan! He moved into his own home today! 🏠 He has BIG plans and goals and he’s working hard towards them.

Does anyone have a queen or larger bed they would like to donate? He is almost 7 feet tall and the twin is pretty small for him.

Help us congratulate our neighbor, Liz on her new apartment! 🏠

Remember our neighbor that was found frozen to the bottom of his tent? He had pretty severe frostbite and the hospital wanted to amputate his foot. The good news is that Hillsdale Hospital wound care helped him save his foot! The bad news is they had to remove his big toe. He’s pretty bummed out about losing his toe but check out how he is decorating his boot!
If you’d like to support Jarvis he’s getting low on a few medical supplies. We have added 4x4 non stick gauze pads, Coban wrap, scissors, Tylenol and Ibuprofen to our Amazon Wish list. The link is in the comments. Or if you’d rather buy locally and drop it off that works too! Thank you!

Also, Jarvis gave me a picture of his foot. He thinks you all would want to see it. 😬
Put a 🦶🏼foot emoji in the comments if you want to see it. Put a 👎🏽 thumb down if you don’t want to see it.

Jude Baker chose to skip a dream trip to Disney World so he could help feed hundreds of people in his community.

After overcoming a rare bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma, Jude, from Summerville, Georgia, decided to use his Make-A-Wish in a different way, by helping others.

Instead of taking a vacation. He organized an event that provided hot meals and essential supplies to more than 300 people experiencing homelessness.

He spent the day serving food and handing out sleeping bags, making sure everyone in need was taken care of before stepping away himself.

The young lad's selfless deed touched the town. A GoFundMe was set up and money has been raised for Jude and his family to take a trip together after his treatment.

What an absolute hero! ❤️

Why do we call the clients at HOPE Harbor our neighbors?

According to Jesus in the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37), a neighbor is anyone in need that you encounter, regardless of their background, race, religion, or social status. Jesus defines a neighbor not by proximity or familiarity, but by active compassion and mercy shown to others.

Key aspects of Jesus' definition include:
• Anyone in Need: A neighbor is not just a friend or someone nearby, but anyone you can help, even those considered enemies or outsiders.
• Action-Oriented: Being a neighbor is a verb; it is the act of showing mercy and love, as
demonstrated by the Samaritan, rather than simply a legalistic definition.
• Transcending Barriers: Jesus' example intentionally broke down ethnic and religious prejudices, indicating that love should know no boundaries.
• "Go and Do Likewise": Following the parable, Jesus commands that his followers show the same proactive, sacrificial love to everyone.

The question was initially prompted by a lawyer trying to limit the definition, to which Jesus replied that any person requiring mercy is our neighbor.

We have 16 neighbors at HOPE Harbor and we love each and every one of them.

Dignity matters.
Something as simple as soap, toothpaste, or deodorant can restore confidence, open doors, and remind someone they are seen.
This room may be filled with supplies... but what it really holds is care.
Because every detail matters when you're helping someone move forward.
