The Orange County Center of N.C. Cooperative Extension is pleased to welcome Lian Rothschild as our new Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, effective June 1.

Lian is a longtime 4-H alumna from Maryland who truly understands the power of 4-H to "make the best better" and inspire kids to "learn by doing." Growing up in the program, her projects spanned everything from livestock to fashion r***e to public speaking.

Lian brings over 15 years of experience as a teacher and coordinator to our team. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Education and Secondary Education from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatrical Properties Direction from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

"As a proud 4-H alumna, I am excited to join the Orange County 4-H Program just in time for summer camp season," says Lian. "I am extremely passionate about providing opportunities through youth programming, and I look forward to putting my 15+ years of public education experience into service alongside our members and volunteers as we make our best better, together."

"Lian is the right leader to move Orange County 4-H to the next level," says Jonathon Smith, Orange County Extension Director. "Her experience as a 4-H'er, her wide-reaching project interests, her passion for education, and her leadership skills will help strengthen our clubs, summer camps, community outreach, and overall impact on youth and families. I believe our many 4-H volunteers, parents, and supporters will enjoy working with Lian and Dr. Kathleen Rogers to provide programs and activities that are responsive to the needs of our local youth."

Please join us in giving Lian a warm welcome! You can reach her by email at [email protected] or by phone at 919-245-2069.

Welcome, Lian!

School’s out for summer, but healthy meals shouldn't stop! ☀️ We know finding nutritious food during the summer months can be a challenge for many families.

That's why we are working with Orange County's school systems and other community partners to promote summer feeding programs across the County and help ensure families know what resources they can turn to for support. Visit our website to view a list of locations and dates. We are updating our website as announcements are made. So please check back regularly.

We also encourage all eligible families to consider applying for Sun Bucks. SUN Bucks is a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) program that provides grocery-buying benefits in a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child on a debit-like card that can be used to buy nutritious food during the summer months when schools are out.

Visit https://orange.ces.ncsu.edu/foodsecurity/youth-summer-feeding-programs/ for more information.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the detection of a New World screwworm (NWS) in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. NWS is a serious pest that affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and less commonly, people and birds. NWS larvae (maggots) burrow into the flesh of living animals, causing serious damage to livestock and economic losses.

The affected animal is a 3-week-old calf and larvae were identified in its umbilical area. Please use the links in comments to learn more.

The action plan includes:

Forming a unified Incident Command Team with the Texas Animal Health Commission and deploying response personnel to the area;

Establishing a 20 km infested zone around the detection and implementing quarantines, movement controls, and surveillance in this area;

Expediting targeted release of sterile NWS flies by immediately deploying ground release chambers in the area, in addition to the 4 million sterile flies per week already being released aerially in the area;

Increasing trapping for NWS flies along the border and just outside of the dispersal area;

Implementing NWS surveillance and management strategies in wildlife; and

Conducting targeted outreach in the local area.

Stretching your SNAP benefits doesn’t have to be a struggle! 🛒

With a few smart moves, you can fill your cart with healthy, delicious meals without breaking the bank. Here are 3 quick tips for your next grocery run:

🍲Go for store brands: Skip the big names and reach for the "generic" or store-brand versions. They usually have the exact same ingredients but cost way less.

🫘Buy staples in bulk: Stock up on rice, dried beans, and oats. They are filling, shelf-stable and cost much less per serving than pre-packaged meals.

📱Download Store Apps: Clip digital coupons before you go and check the weekly circulars to plan your meals around what’s on sale.

To learn more about the SNAP program, visit the morefood.org website or call the More In My Basket team toll-free at 1-855-240-1451.
