The City of Hillsboro is currently in Phase 3 of its Lead Service Line Replacement Project and customers who received this tag will have their water service lines replaced if they are lead or galvanized. The City of Hillsboro is accepting applications for a laborer/operator in the street department. Reporting to the department supervisor, the person filling this position will have regular day-to-day duties that include a variety of infrastructure repair and maintenance, brush removal, snow removal, etc.

All applicants must obtain an application from the City’s website, hillsboroillinois.net or the Hillsboro City Clerk’s Office at 447 S. Main St., Hillsboro, IL between the hours of 8 am – 4 pm, Monday – Friday. The completed application must be returned to Hillsboro City Hall by Friday, September 25, 2026 at 4 pm. The City of Hillsboro Board of Police and Fire Commissioners is accepting applications to generate a two-year hiring list for City of Hillsboro Fire Department Engineer / Dispatcher. All applicants must be 21 years of age, successfully graduated high school or equivalent, and must possess a valid driver’s license. Applicants may not have any felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions. Entry-level applicants must be able to pass a physical and written examination.

-Starting pay: $24.49 per hour, shift differential of $0.30 per hour for afternoons, and $0.40 per hour for midnights

-City-provided medical, dental and vision insurance with some employee contributions (Single $66.15 per pay, Employee and Spouse $79.28 per pay, and Family $88.96 per pay).

-Downstate Fire Pension Retirement

-NEW MILEAGE: must live within 15 miles from City Hall

-City-provided uniforms and equipment.

Applications can be picked up at Hillsboro City Hall or online at hillsboroillinois.net. Applications must be completed and returned to Hillsboro City Hall no later than Friday, September 25, 2026 at 4 p.m.

The City of Hillsboro Board of Police and Fire Commissioners is accepting applications to generate a two-year testing/hiring list for the City of Hillsboro Police Department. All applicants must be at least 21 years of age, successfully graduated high school or equivalent, must possess a valid driver’s license and FOID Card or be able to obtain a valid FOID Card. Applicants may not have any felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions that would prevent them from being an Illinois Police Officer. Entry-level applicants must be able to pass a physical and written examination. If selected, applicants must undergo a psychological evaluation. Applicants who are hired must maintain their principle residence as follows: for purposes of a take-home squad car, the employee must be living within 10 miles of City Hall, must be living within the Hillsboro School District, and must be a Montgomery County resident. If an employee lives outside of 10 miles and not more than 20 miles from City Hall, they shall be considered for employment purposes, but will not be entitled to a take-home squad car.

Starting base salary for police officers: $24.43 per hour; $27.14 per hour after 1 year

The City offers applicants with prior law enforcement experience/training lateral transfer incentives. Officers with a minimum of 3 years of continuous full-time experience at the same department will receive the 5-year longevity benefit time and pay to start, 3 weeks of paid vacation and base starting wage of $27.49 per hour.

Packets for the April 6, 2027 Consolidated Election will be available for pickup tomorrow (August 25th). If you or someone you know is interested in running for a seat as a Commissioner or Mayor on the Hillsboro City Council, you may pick up your packets at City Hall, located at 447 S. Main St. The first day to file is Monday, November 16th, and the filing period lasts until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23rd. Petitions must be turned in to City Hall. If you have any questions, please contact the City Clerk's Office.
