New openings at our Hillsboro Forest Campus! 🌲

We have a few openings in our older student classes for the 2026/27 school year:

Kestrels | Ages 8–12

These classes are for kids who are ready to spend their days outside — exploring the forest, building skills, working on projects, asking big questions, and learning through real experiences.

Students practice outdoor skills like fire building, shelter making, tracking, carving, nature journaling, plant knowledge, and land stewardship, while also building confidence, independence, friendships, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

Our older student classes also weave in academic learning through hands-on projects, seasonal studies, storytelling, writing, ecology, math, and problem-solving.

These beautiful candids have been taking up so much space on our phones, so we thought the best thing to do was to share a WildRoots photo dump!

We try to find a balance between letting our students enjoy raw moments in the woods while also trying to capture the beauty and wanderlust of the moments.

We never want our phones to disrupt a moment between a child and nature.

These are just some of the few beautiful moments from the last couple of weeks that our teachers have captured.

At WildRoots, we need our kids to grow up with nature.

We want our children to grow up with dirt under their fingernails, wet socks from jumping in puddles, and muddy pants from digging in the ground.

Once you become comfortable relaxing your body in nature, you learn to understand it. You learn why animals act a certain way and why it feels so safe in a bed of grass.

Then, once you’ve truly grown your relationship with nature, your only other instinct is to protect the place that protects you.

We love mud kitchens!

Mud is a gift the heavy rains of Oregon give us every season, and we want to make the most of this wet and playful gift.

What is a mud kitchen? You don’t need to bring the mud into your house to have a mud kitchen—bring the kitchen to your mud!

A mud kitchen is an intentional play space that’s meant for messy, creative play.

Our mud kitchens are stocked with pots, pans, ladles, cups, and anything else that can encourage children’s imaginations.

Our students find natural materials, like sticks, leaves, and dirt, to “cook up” something fun and exciting in their kitchen.

Mud kitchens beautifully combine real life skills, like stirring, scooping, and pouring, with imaginative skills to create a well rounded playful experience.

Playing in mud is a rich sensory experience that welcomes children to dig their hands deep in the cold wet mud. We love when our students use their hands to learn. Sometimes, you can’t get the full experience until you’re elbow deep in a mud pile.

While our students are running their mud cafe or baking their famous mud brownies, they’re not just embracing creative play but they’re also learning to communicate with their fellow bakers and shop owners.

We love the opportunities a little bit of mud can give to our students!

At our school, stewardship is more than just a responsibility; it is a heartfelt act of gratitude for the resources and community we share. We take pride in teaching our students how to care for our environment and support one another every single day. With the school year winding down, here are some of our projects from the last few months.

Every class at WildRoots works on projects that teach new skills and encourage students to engage more with nature.

In picture one, the Towhees are planting new seeds for the garden.

In picture two, the Robins made rocket ships inspired by the recent rocket launch!

In picture three, the Chickadees are decorating eggs.

In picture four, the Kestrels are drawing things they are grateful for and writing letters.

In picture five, a Raven constructed a sword.
