Well I've put this off for as long as I possibly could. I need help.

I am looking for some part-time help now until the end of the year. Work hours and schedule can be variable and we will be as flexible as possible around other scheduling you may have. The primary job duties will be to cut, treat and spray invasive species. Ideal person will be experienced with chainsaw and sprayers, but I am willing to offer paid training to the right person who can learn quickly. Must be able to work alone and independently and have reliable transportation. Must be physically and mentally capable working outside in all elements and steep terrain. You will need to be very comfortable working with herbicides as this is a major part of the job. Showing up on time, being able to communicate effectively, being able to follow directions and doing what you say you will do will go a long ways in this position. Should be located within 45 mins or so of Greenfield Ohio. Ideal for someone looking to gain experience in the conservation field of work or for someone looking to gain some extra income. This will start as 8-16 hrs a week based on weather and scheduling but has the possibility to turn into much more for the right person. Most work would occur in Highland and Adams county. Pay is based on experience but will start at $20/hr. Millage may be paid depending on what location you would be working. Looking for a highly motivated individual with a can do attitude. Someone with an interest in conservation and natural resources will find this position especially meaningful. If you are someone who feels the need to step in and get your hands dirty as opposed to sit back and watch- you may be my type of person. You will be operating chainsaws and spraying herbicides, so needless to say substance abuse will not be tolerated. A resume AND cover letter must be emailed to Seth at [email protected] to be considered. Questions about the job can also be sent to the same email.

This fall we partnered with Midwest Air to drone spray Bush Honeysuckle over top of a mature woodland canopy. As far as we could tell this had not yet been documented in Ohio. We were cautiously optimistic during the entire process, but the results we discovered this spring after greenup blew us away. We documented the process as well as the results, which can be found in the video in comments

It is my hope that our experience during this experiment as well as the data that will be collected will assist in bringing in a new and exciting eradication process for Bush Honeysuckle and other invasives across Ohio.

We completed a prescribed fire on a previous Oak Shelterwood cut for a landowner and it went well. This fire will reduce the number of undersireable woody species and promote future oak regeneration. Thank you to Kestrel Prescribed Fire Solutions, LLC for our prescribed fire partnership and leadership on completing this burn. Thank you to Advanced Habitat Management and all the rest of our great crew as well.

Perhaps most importantly however is that we are thankful to work with landowners such as this one, who exemplify what it means to be a good steward of the land. This landowner has went above and beyond to demonstrate what responsible and sustainable forestry and timber harvest practices look like- and should be an example to all woodland landowners interested in managing timber.

Today I was able to pick up the final component of something I have worked hard towards for many years, the Great Plains 605 no till drill with native grass and small seed box. With this specialized rig we can now drill native grass, pollinator mixes as well as grains- and can be completely mobile in doing so. The completion of this rig will greatly increase our capacity to restore native prairies, which is much needed across our region. My schedule is already full for this spring but if you are in southern Ohio and have CRP, EQIP or any other future plantings please keep us in mind for this winter or next spring.

This is a big step for our business plan of bringing back a conservation land ethic to the places that we call home. Goals made, goals acheived. Did you know that over 99% of Ohio's indigenous prairies have been destroyed? How can we have allowed this to happen? We want to do our part to save what we can and work on restoring and recreating the rest. I am very humbly thankful for everyone that has made this rig possible!

Another Ohio RX fire completed with Kestrel Prescribed Fire Solutions, LLC. Prescribed fire is an incredible management tool to help combat invasive species, promote Oak regeneration, create wildlife habitat and to reduce fuel loads. Additionally, thank you to Advanced Habitat Management and to Will Henderson and Albert for the help today.

Drone spraying.....A cheat code to Bush Honeysuckle management? Maybe. But with a caveat- the time window to spray is EXTREMELY limited. This 6.5 acres was 90% eliminated in about an hour of spray time last fall. But much more time was spent on site studying forest conditions to pick the perfect day to spray. I will post a video of the entire experience once we find more time to get it fully edited. I am thankful to have the folks in my circle that allowed this experiment to happen. Being creative and innovative is how barriers are removed to lead to bigger things- and it only happens working together with good people. It is safe to say that drone spraying Bush Honeysuckle has the potential to be a game changer.

After years of being stagnant we have updated our website. I will be honest- we dedicate most of our time and energy into field work and not social media or online. It is nice to have a fresh website though. Link in comments.

The labors of fall paying off in the spring.

If the woody understory in your woods is green today then you likely have an invasive species problem!

If you have Posion Hemlock on your land now is the time to begin control before it hits its peak growth height later this spring. Control is much easier and safe at ground level as opposed to the 10 to 15 feet that we will see of some plants later this spring. The amount of this deadly plant that I personally observe in parks, especially next to hiking trails and areas where kids routinely play is alarming! We worked on a school land lab last spring where a child actually consumed part of a Posion Hemlock. Still trying to spread the word about this deadly invasive plant that's not only hazardous to human health but takes the place of native vegetation as well.

When you live the life that we do you realize that spring isnt determined by a date on a calendar or a week out of school, but rather by the chorus of the early peepers in a nearby water hole and the twittling of Woodcock wings at dusk. We long for what's to come, but this right here, before the flush of green and the certainty of spring flowers... this is the absolute most beautiful time of the year. It signifies the very first proof of life- that we made it another round through the grips of a long winter, and it always fills my heart with hope. As Leopold brilliantly wrote "One swallow does not make a summer, but one skein of geese, cleaving the murk of a March thaw, is the spring".

Pictured is one of many antlers I stumble on while out and about working during my favorite time of the year. A keen eye will look past the fools gold and see why our work will be cut out for us on this project!
