A lot of you know Sharon Boerner. She makes the quilts for all the Shop With a Cop (Heroes and Helpers) kids every year, and is our Honorary Hostess for all the retirements, swearing ins, and new hires. Her husband Don passed away last month after a long illness. If you went to any Hilliard parade the last few years, or rode the bike trails, you probably saw him tooling around on his recumbent bike.

There is a Memorial Service 11am-12pm on Saturday, at Hilliard United Methodist Church, in case you want to pay your respects.

This week’s CPA class 16 covered DUIs and K-9 Unit. Our volunteer “drinker” was Lora Taylor from Class 13. She started drinking shots at 6:15 and repeated the drinks every 15 minutes for a total of 10 shots. After that she was given the PBT (portable breath test) and then the standard FST (field sobriety tests) which included HGN (horizontal gaze nystagmus), the walk and turn and the one leg stand.

Results:
HGN - some involuntary jerking of the eyes were detected.
W&T - she did pretty well on this test, however they detected at least 2 indicators. She stepped off the line a couple of times and she missed the heel to toe a couple of times.
OLS - she was able to count to 1,016 before having to place her foot down, which wouldn’t be so bad. However, this test sealed the deal for a DUI. Reason: it took her 30 seconds to count to 1016. This indicated delayed reaction.

So, what was her number on the PBT? She was at .11 and the number indicating impairment is .08.

Please help if you can. Gifts can be shipped to 5181 Northwest Parkway if you want to do it that way, or you can drop them off in person. All gifts were destroyed and need to be replaced.

At our monthly meeting last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Detective Brandon Long as our guest speaker. He shared his inspiring history of involvement with the Special Olympics organization, along with highlights from his trip to the International Games in Italy earlier this year. He even brought one of the torches from the games for us to see!

It was wonderful hearing from him, and we are grateful for all he does for the Hilliard Division of Police and Hilliard Special Olympics. Thank you, Brandon, for sharing your time, experiences, and dedication with us
