Property Tax Discussion: Wednesday, May 6 Council Meeting

We've been hearing from a lot of you about the proposed property tax discussion, and we want to make sure everyone has the right information before the May 6th meeting.

A new Utah law that took effect this year requires every city, in the public meeting when the tentative budget is first presented, to state if it includes a proposed tax rate increase. May 6th is that meeting for Hildale. No decision is being made on that day. We want people to come and give input. The agenda includes a public comment opportunity where residents can share what they're thinking about the proposed increase.

There will also be an additional formal hearing as part of the Truth in Taxation process at a later meeting, and we'll send the date out as soon as it's set.

A quick note on the numbers, because there's been some confusion. Hildale is proposing a change to its portion of the property tax rate. The actual estimated increase to Hildale's portion on a primary residence valued at $450,000 is about $467 per year. Full details will be in the meeting packet.

We hope to see you Wednesday, May 6 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 320 East Newel Avenue. Please bring your questions to the public comment portion of the meeting. We want to hear from you!

At our last Town Council meeting on Wednesday the City of Hildale recognized El Cappuccino and presented them with a plaque titled Families Building Hildale Community. Each month we take a moment to honor families and local businesses who are helping lift our city and strengthen the community. El Cappuccino stands out as a powerful example of what happens when families step forward with vision dedication and heart.

El Cappuccino was created by two cousins with deep roots in this valley who have put in countless hours of commitment and sweat to build something special here in Hildale. Their restaurant has quickly become a warm gathering place for residents and visitors. Seeing the next generation step up and invest in this community speaks volumes about the future of Hildale and the pride we all share in this place.

We want to congratulate the owners and their families for their hard work and the positive impact they are already making. Moments like this remind us that the strength of Hildale comes from the families who choose to build create and contribute to the growth of our city. Thank you El Cappuccino for being part of that story.

♻️ That’s a Wrap on Landfill Day! 🗑️
This week, with the support of the Hildale City Mayor and Town Council, I had the trash-tastic honor of organizing our annual Landfill Day with over 100 of our local high school and homeschool students! Let’s just say, it was "waste not, want not" when it came to learning!

Together, we dug into:
•Who owns the Arizona Strip Landfill (shoutout to the Towns of Colorado City & Fredonia, AZ!)
•How it’s funded
•What it takes to keep it running (Hint: 10 awesome employees and 7 hard-working garbage trucks!)
•Recycling options
•Battery’s, chemicals, and garbage truck fires.

Students and teachers brought great questions, we had engaging demonstrations, and yes… more than a few dad jokes were recycled throughout the tour.

Both days ended with a weigh-in on the giant scale. Students guessed the total group weight. Final tally? A whopping 14,960 pounds of future landfill experts!

A huge thank you to:
•Vance Barlow, Town Manager of Colorado City
•John Fischer, Operations Manager of the Landfill
•Rose Black, Secretary/Scale House Operator
•Colorado City Council Member John Chatwin
•Mr. Mackey from Water Canyon Highschool
•And all the students and educators who made this two-day event such a success!

Let’s keep teaching the next generation that being environmentally aware is never a waste of time.
