Not every electric bike is legally considered an e-bike in Wisconsin.
Before you ride, know the difference:
• Class 1 e-bike: Pedal assist only, up to 20 mph
• Class 2 e-bike: Throttle + pedal assist, up to 20 mph
• Class 3 e-bike: Pedal assist only, up to 28 mph, rider must be age 16 or older
In Wisconsin, Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes must have functional pedals and a motor rated at 750 watts or less.
Electric dirt bikes and other off-highway e-motos are different. They are not considered Class 1, 2, or 3 e-bikes under state law and are generally not allowed on bike lanes, sidewalks, trails, or public roads unless they meet separate legal requirements.
Ride smart and ride legal:
• Wear a helmet
• Use lights and reflective gear when riding at night
• Obey traffic laws and signals
• Yield to pedestrians
• Use bike lanes and paths where allowed
• Keep your e-bike in safe working condition
