No broken axles. No lost supplies. Just a lot of devices, networks, accounts, monitors, phones and the occasional printer that decides it's had enough.

Happy IT Professionals Day to our District 112 tech team, whose work touches just about every part of the school day. They help make sure our technology works when students and staff need it, while also doing the critical work of keeping our systems secure and protecting student and staff data.

And yes, they also fix the things that mysteriously start working the second they walk into the room.

This week in , we’re checking in with 4th grade, where students are exploring this question: How do your experiences help shape your identity?

As part of the “What Makes Us Who We Are?” module, students read “Kitoto the Mighty” by Tololwa M. Mollel, a folktale about a small mouse determined to find the most powerful being of all.

4th graders are practicing retelling the story and examining its literary elements, including characters, setting, plot, conflict and resolution. They are also using evidence from the text to think about the story’s theme and how the author’s choices help shape its meaning.

Along the way, students are building toward the module’s bigger idea: that our experiences, interests and passions help shape who we are.

A special moment at Wayne Thomas yesterday. ❤️

During an assembly, students and staff recognized our Maintenance & Operations team for the tremendous amount of work that went into moving an entire school to Elm Place and getting the building ready for the year.

Students signed a banner thanking the team, then got permission to get loud and show just how much they appreciated them. They did not waste the opportunity! 👏

A well-deserved thank you for a team whose work behind the scenes made this school year possible.

Solar panels are now in place at Indian Trail and Edgewood, with installation also underway at Oak Terrace.

Our commitment to sustainability is really about being thoughtful with the resources we have and making choices that will benefit our schools and community for years to come.

We also want our schools to reflect the values we hope students carry with them: thinking long term, using resources wisely and understanding that the choices we make can have an impact beyond ourselves.

This school year, we’re bringing back to give families a closer look at what students are learning in ELA. Each week, we’ll highlight a different grade level and share some of the reading, writing and skills students are working on in class.

We’re starting with 5th grade, where students are exploring this question: What kinds of circumstances push people to create new inventions?

5th graders are beginning the year with the Inventors at Work module. This week, they are reading “Winds of Hope” by Katy Duffield, a narrative nonfiction text about a young boy who uses ingenuity and perseverance to bring electricity to his village.

As they read, students are looking at how the text is organized, identifying cause-and-effect relationships and practicing strategies to monitor their understanding and clarify ideas that may be unfamiliar.

It’s an engaging start to the year that connects reading skills with a bigger question about how people use creativity to solve problems.

There’s something special about sitting down with a group of kindergarteners and a good book.

To start the year, Dr. Schroeder is visiting schools across the district with the goal of reading to every kindergarten class. Along the way, she’s getting to know some of our youngest learners and spending time in the classrooms where their school journeys are just beginning.

A big thank you to the Highwood and Highland Park Police Departments for visiting our schools and helping make the first days of the year feel so welcoming. We’re grateful for the strong partnership and support they provide our students, staff and community.

Last night’s Board of Education meeting put a spotlight on student voice and district priorities for the year ahead.

The Board welcomed its first student representatives and approved the district’s final 2026-2027 budget. Dr. Schroeder also shared her performance goals for the year and introduced a new districtwide Wildly Important Goal focused on student agency and leadership.
