14th District Greens

14th District Greens JoAnn Cousin and Steven Welzer ran as the 2015 Green Party candidates for General Assembly in New Je Whatever we do to the web of life, we do to ourselves.

The campaign was informed by the Ten Key Values of the Green politics movement:

Ecological Wisdom
The Greens recognize that the Earth sustains all life forms. Social Justice
Greens find the worldwide growth of poverty and injustice unacceptable and are working for a world in which all can fulfill their potential regardless of gender, race, citizenship, or sexual orientation. Grassroots Democracy

The powerless suffer the most from resource exhaustion and toxic pollution. Greens believe in direct participation by all citizens in the environmental, political, and economic decisions that affect their lives. Nonviolence
Greens reject violence as a way of resolving disputes - it is shortsighted, morally wrong, and ultimately self-defeating. We advocate demilitarization and abhor state organized killing of any kind; therefore we are against the death penalty and we work to end war forever. Decentralization
Power and responsibility must be restored to local communities, within an overall framework of ecologically sound, socially just values and lifestyles. To counter the alienation of mass industrial society, we work toward the restoration of humanly-scaled communities, institutions, and technologies. We view political decentralization as a prerequisite for substantive participatory democracy. Community-Based Economics
Greens seek the deconcentration of wealth and power; we assert that extreme disparities in personal wealth and concentrated control of productive assets are inherently undemocratic. Therefore we advocate a new economics which first and foremost assures that the basic needs of everyone on the planet are met (sufficiency) - while taking account of the natural limits of the Earth. We advocate decentralization in the economic sphere as well as the political sphere; this would mean regionalizing economic activity as much as practical - to foster local self-reliance and accountability. Feminism
The ethics of cooperation and understanding must replace the values of domination and control. Gender should not be a basis for discrimination nor for role typecasting. Respect for Diversity
We honor the biological diversity of the Earth, and the cultural, sexual, and spiritual diversity of Earth's people. We aim to reclaim this country's finest ideals: popular democracy, the dignity of the individual, and liberty and justice for all. Personal and Global Responsibility
Greens express commitment to global sustainability and international justice both through political solidarity and personal lifestyles based on sufficiency and living lightly upon the Earth. Future Focus/Sustainability
Like the Iroquois Indians, Greens seek a society where the interests of the seventh future generation are considered equal to the interests of the present. Every generation should, minimally, seek to leave the planet no worse off than when it was bequeathed to them. We must act in the present in such a way as to reclaim the future for our children and their children.

Some issues that Green Party campaigns in New Jersey will be addressing:
1. Promote the concept of a living wage and worker-controlled business models, including an immediate $15/hr minimum wage in New Jersey.
2. Create community review boards and appoint independent prosecutors.
3. Establish a single-payer, “Medicare for All” health care system.
4. Welcome refugees from the Syrian Civil War and other conflicts into New Jersey.
5. Support for housing justice and a moratorium on home foreclosures.
6. Full funding for statewide reproductive rights and education.
7. Full funding for public education, including the abolishment of charter schools and shift to education funding from a progressive income tax.
8. Support climate justice initiatives for marginalized communities in New Jersey.
9. Creation of a democratically-run public bank that would maintain a statewide pension system for all New Jersey residents.
10. Increase in transportation funding and job-creating products to improve transportation infrastructure.
11. Electoral reform.
12. Decriminalize ma*****na and ban all private companies from operating in New Jersey prisons.
13. Repeal New Jersey’s anti-BDS legislation and pass new legislation in support of BDS.
14. Funding for clean energy with a focus on creating new jobs and replacing outdated energy infrastructure.

No U.S. troops in Syria!

After the catastrophic failures of regime change in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, the last thing that the U.S. should be doing is trying to orchestrate regime change in Syria. We need to enact an arms embargo on the Middle East rather than effectively arming all sides.

Stand with Jill Stein against putting American troops on the ground in Syria!

After the catastrophes of Iraq and Afghanistan, the last thing the US should be doing is putting troops on the ground in Syria. Stand with Jill Stein against military escalation in Syria.

Almost 9% of the voters in the 24th District voted for Green Party candidate Ken Collins. In the 17th about 5% voted for Molly O'Brien. These are very good results for alternative party candidates. Other Greens were in the range of 2.6% to 3.6% . . . still good relative to what other third party candidates received.

Thanks to all who worked on our campaigns, supported our campaigns, and then voted Green!

Below are the current results (still subject to update).

(i) means incumbent

(There is a quirk about what percentage the press reports because every voter can cast two votes. That doubles the number of votes and makes each percentage seem lower than if you figured it based on the number of VOTERS. If the press says a candidate got 1.2%, it can be assumed that about 2.4% of the voters cast a ballot for that candidate.)

Election Day is this Tuesday.

JoAnn Cousin and Steven Welzer worked hard petitioning to get their names on the ballot and then campaigning to get out their special message . . . about how the Republicans and Democrats are failing to address some of the most important issues of our times; how voters in this country would benefit from the opening up of our electoral system to "more voices and more choices"; how the government in Trenton responds to the needs of the big corporations rather than to the needs of "the 99%"; how we must protect the earth for future generations.

If you live in one of the following townships, please show your support for the Green alternative by casting your Assembly votes for JoAnn and Steve:

Middlesex County: Cranbury, Jamesburg, Monroe, Plainsboro, Spotswood.
Mercer County: East Windsor, Hightstown, Hamilton, Robbinsville.
