The District's Row Mulcher has been out and about this season - Row Mulchers save valuable time and effort while spreading mulch or compost, which helps with w**d suppression, water conservation and moderating soil temperatures. This equipment is part of our rental program and is available to farmers in Ulster County. Check it out in action last week at Hurds Family Farm!

In with the good and out with the bad! Our Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program staff have been working hard to remove invasive plants and establish a native vegetated buffer at this Catskill Streams Buffer Initiative site. The roots of these native plants along with those of the live stakes which were put in a few weeks ago will help to stabilize the banks and prevent sediment from reaching the Panther Kill downslope.

Our Catskill Stream Buffer Initiative (CSBI) within the Ashokan Watershed, is in full swing with riparian planting projects. Stream buffers, which entails planting native trees and shrubs, significantly improves habitat, encourages pollinators and reduces stream bank erosion. Plants are typically more effective and economical compared to hardening the banks with rock before stream banks are too degraded.

Keeping our local farms thriving—one drop at a time!

Ulster County Soil & Water Conservation District recently secured funding to design and implement a livestock watering system that supports rotational grazing, soil health, healthier livestock, improved farm efficiency, and ensures reliable access to fresh water for these hardworking animals. Amanda is checking on the herd with the farmer!

Projects like this strengthen local agriculture while helping farmers steward their land for generations to come.

Healthy riparian areas and forests are essential to our watersheds. They act as a natural sponge, filtering stormwater runoff and preventing erosion. They also provide habitat for wildlife, such as this Barred Owl seen near the Ashokan Reservoir last month.
