Sustainability Sunday: Pollinator Awareness Week 🦋

In honor of Pollinator Awareness Week (June 22-28), this week, we're highlighting the importance of pollinators! Pollination is an essential ecological process that allows plants to reproduce. Animals such as hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles, butterflies, and flies are necessary to pollinate our plants and crops. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, these animals help pollinate over 75% of our flowering plants and crops.
The major threats facing pollinators are habitat loss and pesticide use, but through restoring native plant species and planting a pollinator garden, you can help! We need pollinators to enjoy the fruits, vegetables, nuts, and coffee that we love.

Are you interested in learning more about going solar? Join us for a Solar Power Hour on Thursday, June 25, 6 PM at City Hall (1707 St. Johns Ave.) During the program, you'll learn more about the basics and benefits of solar, and explore how the Switch Together program can help residents save money on the purchase of solar panels. Switch Together, formerly known as Solar Switch, is a reverse auction where pre-vetted installers submit bids, and the best offer is presented with no additional cost or commitment. Because Lake County signed on to this program, residents can participate by submitting their roof information (age, pitch, etc.), and reviewing the best offer.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is appreciated: bit.ly/SolarPowerHourJune25

The City's America 250 programming continues on Thursday, June 18, 7 - 8 PM at Secret World Books with a special literary reading and Q&A with Highland Park Poet Laureate Laura Joyce-Hubbard and author Hugh Martin, an Iraq War veteran, Wallace Stegner Fellow, and poet. Both writers have served in uniform and carried that experience into language. In a year when the nation pauses to take stock of itself and its stories, their work asks what it means to witness, to return, and to make meaning from what endures.

The evening will begin with a reading by Hugh Martin, followed by a conversation between the two poets, an open Q&A, and a book signing with books available for purchase courtesy of Secret World Books.

The event is free but registration via Eventbrite is appreciated: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-of-literary-readings-hugh-martin-laura-joyce-hubbard-tickets-1989878398857

Join us for an open house on Wednesday, June 24, 6 PM at the Highland Park Senior Center (1201 Park Ave. W). You’ll learn more about this initiative and help the City understand local priorities, concerns, and opportunities as we consider ways to contribute to a climate-friendly future that is grounded in the needs of Highland Park residents, property owners, businesses, and the broader community. Sustainability Sunday: Go Solar! ☀️

If you have a sunny roof, then installing rooftop solar is a great way to take charge of your energy bills, save money and reduce your emissions. Existing state, federal and utility incentives make this a perfect time to see how solar can work for you. The Illinois Solar Education Association (ISEA) is the state resource for renewable energy-related policy developments, educational classes, events, and access to local renewable energy businesses. Their website, illinoissolar.org, is a great place to learn about the steps to go solar and find a few contractors in our area to provide a quote.

For more information, check out the Illinois Solar Education Association at illinoissolar.org.
