Access to legal services can be life changing for immigrant families navigating housing instability, safety concerns, and immigration challenges and sometimes all at once.

Immigration issues can affect a family's ability to maintain stable housing and employment. Survivors of domestic violence may face additional barriers connected to their immigration status. Increased enforcement activity has also led to more individuals in detention seeking legal support.

NSLAC is one of the only organizations in northern Cook County and Lake County, IL providing free immigration legal services regardless of immigration status, helping ensure vulnerable community members are not left without representation or support when they need it most.

Have questions about the recent USCIS announcement regarding adjustment of status and green card applications?

You're not alone. We know many immigrants and their families are concerned about what these changes could mean for them.

Our Immigration Law Practice Team has created easy-to-understand resources in English and Spanish that explain what has changed, what has not changed, and why it is important not to make immigration decisions based solely on headlines or social media.

For many families, pets are more than animals. They are beloved members of the family.

What happens to your pets if you suddenly can’t return home? An unexpected hospitalization, detention, natural disaster, or other emergency can leave pets without the care they need.

Having a 'pet emergency plan' can help make sure your pets are safe and cared for, even when you can’t be there. This is especially important for immigrant families and others facing uncertain circumstances.

NSLAC's Legal Library has information about protecting your pets during your absence, including what to consider when making a plan for pet care during an emergency. The guide is available in English and Spanish.

This guide was created through a collaboration between North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic and Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter.

Financial abuse can leave survivors carrying debt they never chose. A new Illinois law offers a path forward. The law creates an affirmative defense for survivors who were forced or coerced into debt by an abuser, helping protect them from being held responsible for that debt. It takes effect January 1.

Thanks to ABC 7 Chicago for the coverage https://abc7chicago.com/videoClip/19787372/

For survivors, leaving abuse should not mean facing years of financial hardship alone. Legal protections can make a real difference.

A new bipartisan Illinois law will help domestic violence survivors with financial hardships and abuse in the form of financial coercive control.
