A college student from our service area came to NSLAC after enduring persistent harassment that began at a social gathering and escalated through repeated social media contact, even after she tried to block it. Like many survivors, she feared that seeking legal help might make things worse.

Our attorneys walked her through her options, explained how a stalking no contact order works, and reassured her that she would not have to appear in court. With support, she chose to move forward, and NSLAC secured a two-year stalking no contact order for her protection.

Harassment and stalking should never be ignored. Learn more in our Legal Library and read the full story. https://nslegalaid.org/mm/turning-fear-into-legal-triumph/

Power of Attorney: Protecting Your Property and Finances in Case of Detention and Deportation

If you have a bank account, own a home, or run a business in the U.S., those assets remain yours—even if you are detained or face deportation. But without a legal plan in place, managing them from afar can be difficult for you and your loved ones.

Taking proactive steps now, such as setting up a Power of Attorney, can provide peace of mind and help protect your hard-earned assets. Learn more about your options in NSLAC’s Legal Library. https://bit.ly/4gB9Pii

Notario fraud happens when someone who is not an immigration attorney or a Department of Justice Accredited Representative pretends they can give you legal advice or help with your immigration case. They often call themselves “Notarios,” “Preparers,” “Consultants,” or “Immigration Legal Advisors” but these titles do not mean they are legally authorized to help you.

Only licensed attorneys and DOJ Accredited Representatives can provide immigration legal advice. If someone promises an easy path to legal status or a work permit, they are lying. Protect yourself by verifying who you work with and never signing or paying for anything you do not fully understand.
If you think you may be a victim of notario fraud or need safe and trusted help, NSLAC is here for you. Call 847 737 4042.

Did you know that tenants with disabilities may have legal protections related to emotional support animals?

An emotional support animal (ESA) can provide important comfort and support for individuals living with mental or emotional health conditions. Under federal and state housing laws, tenants may be entitled to reasonable accommodations, including exceptions to certain pet policies or the waiver of pet-related fees.

Understanding your rights and responsibilities can help prevent housing disputes and support stable housing. Learn more about emotional support animals, housing protections, and what documentation may be required in our latest blog in our Legal Library https://nslegalaid.org/articles/what-is-an-emotional-support-animal-esa/
