In the two years prior to her passing, Dr. Weisberg started purchasing books chosen to inspire young children in Jewish learning and values. They were not intended merely for her family but for the North Shore Community. This “library and play center” was housed in a remodeled addition to her home in Highland Park, IL. Together with The Central Avenue Synagogue, it was expected that groups of youn
g children would be brought to the library beginning in the summer of 2015. During the last months of her life, when it became too difficult for Susan to complete the project, she wrote a letter to Rabbi and Michla Schanowitz, asking if the library and play center could be established within the Synagogue. We are honored and humbled to fulfill her mission. It would come as no surprise to those that knew Dr. Sue well, that she even left specific instructions for the placement of the shelves, which were to be at children’s height for easy observation and grasp. In the future, the Library will include a reading room, an activity center, a puppet theater, an art room and more. So much more than just a library, it will be a warm, inviting children’s dreamland open to all members of the community. There will be mom ‘n tot programming, group play, arts and crafts, music activities, and a host of opportunities for imaginative play and development. Dr. Sue lived her life caring for young children, dedicating herself at all hours of the day and night to ensuring their health and well-being. She took a personal interest in each of her patients and their families, treating them as if they were members of her own family. The Library is a way for the community to help perpetuate her legacy of love and to say THANKS, DOC!
