Every year, Mayor Booker returns to Akron East High School were he once taught, to present a leadership award name after him. "The Master Sergeant to Mayor Michael L. Booker Leadership Award" recognizes a high school student that leads, motivates, and inspires others to achieve their highest potential. This year the recipient was Cadet Sergeant Yariel Carrion. Way to go Yariel! We are looking for great things from you in the future.

I am deeply troubled by a national administration and state government that have failed to honor the late Rev. Jesse Jackson by ordering flags to be flown at half-mast. Equally concerning is a nation that does not seem outraged by this oversight.
Lowering a flag to half-staff is a solemn and respectful way to commemorate individuals who have made significant contributions or sacrifices in our world. Rev Jackson certainly falls into that category.

It is customary to recognize local heroes as well. Just yesterday, we lost Mrs. Sandra Vodanoff, whose family has been part of our community since 1964. If you knew her, you understand she was more than just a neighbor. She was a local icon that has helped shape the Tri-cities for the last 6 decades. Let me clarify that I am not comparing Rev. Jackson and Mrs. Vodanoff; rather, I am stating that both deserve to be honored.

When a flag is flown at half-staff, it symbolizes mourning and remembrance. This powerful gesture is meant to pay tribute to those who have had a profound impact on their communities or the world at large, whether through acts of bravery, service, or leadership. Both individuals have done more than their share to make this world a better place.

So, if someone asks you why the flags in the Village of Highland Hills, Ohio are at half-staff, please inform them it is to honor the contributions, character, and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson and Mrs. Sandra Vodanoff. - Mayor Michael L Booker
