This week, a federal judge cleared the way for the US Postal Service (USPS) to move forward with a plan to implement rules based on a controversial executive order President Donald Trump signed in March that could stop eligible voters from receiving ballots.
The ruling comes a week before North Carolina boards of elections are legally required to start sending out mail-in ballots for the general election.
Under the new system created by the USPS, states are required to upload a list of voters who have requested an absentee ballot and provide a barcode for each absentee voter.
If the postal service cannot locate these voters in its system, it will refuse to send the ballot to the voter, despite being eligible to receive a ballot under North Carolina law.
The system is yet to be implemented.
Attorney General Jeff Jackson says because ballots must be sent out beginning on Sept. 4, the new rules could put North Carolinians’ ability to cast their votes in jeopardy.
The press release from the NC Department of Justice also reiterates that states, not the federal government, administer elections.
