The Hicksville Historical Society plans to celebrate the 190th anniversary of the Long Island Rail Road on Tuesday, October 8th at 11AM in the Kenneth S. Barnes Community Room, the Hicksville Public Library.
That date was chosen because it will mark 69 years since Operation Changeover in 1955. On that day, the Long Island Rail Road officially retired steam locomotives from service. Steam locomotives #35 and #39 were the official “retirees.”
The purpose of the event will be two-fold.
1 - A plaque will be unveiled dedicated to the end of steam locomotives on the LIRR. This plaque, funded by the Hicksville Historical Society at a cost of $944 will hopefully be placed at the south end of Hicksville's Kennedy Park, when restoration work at the park is completed. This location is in the vicinity of the former ground-level tracks. Ideally, the plaque will be unveiled by Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Saladino and Hicksville Historical Society president Richard Althaus.
2 - A portrait of Valentine Hicks will be unveiled. This portrait has been in storage at a Nassau County Parks Department facility for several decades. It has been well-preserved in a wooden crate and it looks as though it was painted yesterday. It is hoped that the County will loan this portrait to be put on display at the Hicksville Gregory Museum. Ideally, the portrait will be unveiled by Nassau County Executive Blakeman and by Long Island Rail Road president Rob Free.
To enhance this event the Railroad Museum of Long Island will bring the bell from steam locomotive #39 to the library that day.
Mark your calendar for October 8th and attend this event.
