The Western Piedmont Council of Governments (WPCOG) is a voluntary association of local governments organized in 1968 as a nonprofit group to provide long-range planning and technical assistance. Our organization is one of 16 regional councils in North Carolina formed under NC General Statutes 160A 470-478. Local governments eligible for WPCOG membership include Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties located in Western NC and the 24 cities and towns within those counties. Our mission statement is to "serve all local government members with professional, cost effective assistance on a variety of local, regional, state and federal issues and programs." Secretary Lee Lilley recently toured Burke and Caldwell counties to visit successfully completed Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) projects!

Over two days, stops included Western Piedmont Community College, the Burke County Business Park, the Town of Drexel Industrial Site, Granite Falls, the Town of Hudson HUB Station (pictured), Caldwell Community College, and meetings with both the Burke and Caldwell EDCs.

The WPCOG is proud to have assisted with these transformative grants that strengthen communities across the Western Piedmont.

Charlotte recently asked the state for permission to withdraw up to 63 million gallons of water per day from the Catawba River basin, permanently removing it from our region.

Thanks to the leadership of our state lawmakers – Speaker Destin Hall, Rep. Jay Adams, Rep. Hugh Blackwell, Sen. Warren Daniel, Rep. Blair Eddins, Sen. Ralph Hise, Sen. Mark Hollo, Sen. Eddie Settle, and Rep. Mitchell Setzer – the new state budget includes a provision blocking large inter-basin transfers like this one through August 1, 2028.

This matters because water we send elsewhere doesn't come back – especially during droughts, when our families and businesses need it most.

We're not against Charlotte growing; we just don't want it to be at our expense.

We're thankful for our delegation's work to protect what matters to our community.
