The Chamber of Commerce is excited with the ongoing work at the former E.W. James and Son's grocery store on Seventh Street.
We are very proud of the new owner, who is showing a strong commitment to business growth in our community.
Work is moving on, as you can see in the latest photos, with the new gasoline pumps being installed.
This is going to be a great addition to our city, and an added shopping location for our local residents.
We hope this will also prompt other businesses to consider Hickman as a place to provide their products and services.

Farmers Harvest Underway!!!
As many have already seen in Hickman, harvest is underway for farmers locally and around the area.
We are very fortunate and proud to have two grain markets in our city, which are used for distribution of corn, soybeans and wheat.
Due to the early spring planting, producers are now in an early harvest of both corn and soybeans.
With the continued construction of the widening project at the Seventh Street and Union City Highway intersection, farmers from around the region are now forced to travel on our city streets to get their crops to the market.
Due to their heavy loads, issues with low hopper bottoms and low shoulders on some streets, travel is going to be very difficult for the grain truck drivers.
We encourage all local motorists to be patient and courteous during this time of the Fall harvest, which will help the producers have a safe and successful season.
Remember, this is just a temporary issue, as the widening project is scheduled for completion in November.
Upon completion, the new intersection will be a tremendous benefit for our farmers, industries, schools and businesses in the future.

This is going to be a great event...We are proud of S.G. and all she has been able to accomplish so far.....there is much to come from her songwriting imagination.....really good to see the university recognizing her also!

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is proud to welcome alum and singer-songwriter S.G. Goodman as the featured guest for the 2026 Charles and Marlene Johnson Colloquium Series.
Goodman will share experiences that shaped her as an artist and perform selections from her acclaimed albums on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Lovett Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of Hickman, Kentucky, Goodman graduated from Murray State in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a minor in creative writing. She has released three studio albums, Old Time Feeling (2020), Teeth Marks (2022), and Planting by the Signs (2025), and has headlined sold-out tours and opened for artists such as Tyler Childers and Jason Isbell in venues from Red Rocks to the Grand Ole Opry. Goodman has also been a featured artist on Mountain Stage, World Cafe, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts and Austin City Limits.

Goodman is also the recipient of the 2023 Emerging Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Association Awards. Planting by the Signs has been nominated for AMA’s 2026 Album of the Year, and “Snapping Turtle,” a single from the record, has been nominated for Song of the Year. The winners will be announced on September 16 during the Americana Honors & Awards, held at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

The Charles and Marlene Johnson Colloquium Series was established with the goal of bringing guest lecturers, visiting artists, musicians and academic experts to the stage of historic Lovett Auditorium. Dr. Charles Johnson (’56) and the late Mrs. Marlene Rann Johnson (’57) shared a great appreciation for the performing arts and higher education.

If you have driven down Seventh Street over the past few days, you have seen activity ongoing at the former E.W. James grocery store.
Several vehicles have been at the site in the mornings, with people working in the gasoline tank area, inside the store and on the awning.
It is really good to see the activity happening at this location.
Hopefully this means the city is not that far away from having this new business providing a needed service for our residents.
These pictures over the past two days shows improvements that have been made on the building.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday at Fulton County Middle School to officially launch the new "Patterson Career Exploration Lab".
The Fulton County School System is one of only two systems in Western Kentucky to be awarded the labs, which helps young students explore possible career pathways.
Fifteen training modules are currently in the lab, which includes the opportunity to learn about small motors skills, plumbing, cosmetology/barbering, veterinary and more.
Taylor Greer was introduced as the lab instructor for the project by school Superintendent Ellen Murphy.
Dr. Susan Beatty, of West Kentucky Educational Cooperative, and Dianne Owen, Fulton County Schools, wrote the NEEW grant which made the project possible.
Those attending the ceremony this week included Robbie Rudolph with the Four Rivers Foundation, Murray State President Dr. Ron Patterson, First District State Senator Jason Howell and Christy Rogers, with Patterson Career Labs.
It was a good day for the Fulton County School System and the students who will have the opportunity to explore different career pathways.

It was a great day for the Cayce community on Wednesday, with the official groundbreaking of the new Cannonball Run Subdivision.
During ceremonies held at the site, it was announced that seven new homes would be constructed, as part of ongoing tornado damage recovery.
The subdivision is named in honor of the legendary railroad engineer, John Luther "Casey" Jones, who once resided in the Cayce community.
Local, state and Community Ventures officials were on hand to speak and conduct the official groundbreaking.
Many community supporters also attended the event, which included board members of the Hickman Chamber of Commerce.

Congratulations goes out to Lt. Commander Brad Carlton on his retirement after 27 years in the United States Navy.
Brad enlisted in 1999, and served with HS-6, HS-10, HS-14 and Naval Aviation School Command.
He qualified as a Seahawk Weapons and Tactical Instructor, Helicopter Aerial Door Gunner Instructor, Small Arms Instructor, Master Training Specialist and Emergency Medical Technician.
In March of 2014, Brad was commissioned through the Limited Duty Officer Program.
During his career, he led high performance teams, advanced fleet readiness, and trained thousands of Sailors who continue serving around the world.
Brad was awarded the Air Medal, five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, seven Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, along with numerous other service awards.
Following Brad's service of 27 years to the nation, his cousin Captain James McPeake presided over the retirement ceremony.
Brad is the son of the late David Carlton and Judy Carlton.

The Fulton County School System held their "Back to School" event today for teachers and staff....breakfast was served with community members and former teachers also invited to participate.....many were invited to speak about their school days at Fulton County and their hopes for a great year......Superintendent Ellen Murphy also offered words during the event......buses will begin running on Wednesday, as students return to the classroom....
