We want to recognize one of our own who will soon serve our community in a new way. Firefighter/EMT Gage Blockhus will be leaving for basic training boot camp this week as he starts his career in the Air Force Guard. Tonight several of our members started their journey to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Over the next several months they will dedicate two nights a week for classroom learning, hands-on skills training, and clinical experience to become certified. It’s a big commitment on top of their regular duties — and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication.

Also a huge shout out to our partners at Monroe Township Fire Department for sending several members to join in on the class.

Watch for updates over the next several months as this group goes through class!

The City of Hiawatha is proud to honor active duty, retired, and honorably discharged members of the U.S. Armed Forces with custom military banners displayed throughout the community.

⭐ Open to everyone! No Hiawatha connection required!
Anyone may apply to honor a service member.

Banner details:
• Full-color, double-sided banners with photo, branch & years of service
• Displayed along Center Point Rd, Emmons St & Robins Rd
• Shown Memorial Day–Veterans Day in 2026 & 2027

💲 Cost: $125 (includes banner + installation for two years)
⏳ Limit: 80 banners — first come, first served
