Shirley was instrumental in the success of the “Boat Sheaux” over the last decade (and beyond). Her warm spirit, clever sense of humor, and dedication to the preserving the heritage & traditions of the Les Cheneaux Islands will be sorely missed.
RIP Shirley
The Board of Directors of the Les Cheneaux Historical Association is grieved to share the news of our dear friend Shirley Jewell's death.
Shirley was the longtime director of programs and exhibits at the Les Cheneaux Historical Association. Alongside her work at the Historical and Maritime museums, Shirley was instrumental in the annual Antique Wooden Boat Show as co-chair and director of the Festival of Arts. Her work was crucial in developing the Festival of Arts and ensuring each aspect of the event was meticulously arranged. If you've walked through the many festival booths and appreciated the work of the wonderful artisans, or admired the Chris-Crafts floating in Hessel Harbor on the second Saturday in August, you've enjoyed Shirley's extraordinary work and her deep passion for the Les Cheneaux Islands.
We hope to carry on her hard work and preservation efforts so that future generations may enjoy what she loved about the LCI. We will sorely miss her presence, and we grieve alongside her family and friends in her death.
We have many great memories of her over the years, and we hope she will be cherished for many years to come through her incredible work in the Les Cheneaux area.
