A proposal for future development projects in Derry Township to submit a donation to the volunteer fire company during the land development process could soon be approved by the board of supervisors

The announcement only took a moment in the midst of a much longer meeting, but the proposal for a “fire protection fee for new development projects” in Derry Township could have much larger political, financial and public safety implications. At the Oct. 28 meeting of the Derry Township Board of...

I’ve heard your frustrations about the ongoing bridge replacement on Laudermilch Road in Derry Township. The $10.6 million project, which started in 2023, has encountered delays due to Norfolk Southern’s review process for the railroad company’s right of way.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) officials tell me they’re eyeing a June 2026 completion. Detours are in place during the bridge’s replacement.

I’m continuing to advocate for this project to be done quickly and safely.

HARRISBURG – A low-interest loan awarded today will support Derry Township Municipal Authority as it replaces a pump station known to have issues with taking on more water than it can handle, according to Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin).

The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) approved a loan of almost $8.6 million to replace the township’s High Meadow pump station, which struggles with inflow during wet weather. It exceeded capacity twice in recent years due to flooding near the intersection of Old West Chocolate Avenue and Hersheypark Drive.

“It is important upgrades are made to this facility, particularly because it is in close proximity to Swatara Creek,” Mehaffie said. “Derry Township Municipal Authority plans to create an access road and install a new generator to ensure the pump station is functional during even the worst storms.”

Derry Township Municipal Authority sought the funding to make upgrades that will serve current and future sewer customers. Already, more than 8,400 homes and businesses are served by the authority.

“Working with Rep. Mehaffie, it is always exciting to see great projects delivered in our district,” said Sen. Patty Kim (D-Dauphin). “I applaud Derry Township Municipal Authority for smartly and effectively leveraging state funds to invest in infrastructure that meets the needs of a growing region.”

Established in 1988, PENNVEST provides capital funding for drinking water, sewer, stormwater and non-point source pollution prevention projects that benefit the health, safety, environment and economic development of the Commonwealth. The 20-year loan has interest rates ranging from 1.7% to 2.1%.
